Full Description

Castel Sant'Angelo and its boat stop

Castel Sant'Angelo began life around 139 AD as the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, later became a papal fortress and refuge, and is still linked to the Vatican by the raised passage known as the Passetto di Borgo. It is the first stop for the default option of this pass, so your Castel Sant'Angelo boat ride starts right beside the Ponte Sant'Angelo, whose angel statues were carved in the seventeenth century in Bernini's circle.

To reach the dock, take the stairs down from Ponte Sant'Angelo on the bank opposite the castle. Many visitors combine a castle visit with the boat, because the fortress terraces and the river give two very different views of the same skyline. Boats from this stop leave at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:55, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00 and 18:00, and you should be at the landing stage at least ten minutes before departure.

Isola Tiberina, Rome's island in the river

Isola Tiberina is the small boat-shaped island in the Tiber, linked to the banks by two of the oldest bridges in Rome, Ponte Fabricio and Ponte Cestio. Legend connects it with a temple of the healing god Aesculapius, and a hospital has stood here for centuries, which is why the island is still associated with care and health.

The second boarding option starts here. Reach the dock by the stairs down from Ponte Cestio or Ponte Garibaldi on the Trastevere side. From the island you can walk to the lanes of Trastevere, the old Jewish Ghetto or the Teatro di Marcello in a few minutes, so a Rome Tiber boat hop-on hop-off ticket works well as a link between neighbourhoods. Departures from this stop run at 11:00, 12:00, 13:20, 14:25, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30 and, as the last of the day, 18:30 on a half route only.

Bridges, the Palazzaccio and the Neo-Gothic church seen from the Tiber

The full route sails between Ponte Cestio and Ponte Pietro Nenni and takes about an hour there and back. High stone embankments, built after the great floods of the late nineteenth century, hide the traffic, so the river feels sheltered and quiet, yet they frame striking landmarks: the massive Palace of Justice, nicknamed the Palazzaccio, and the slim Neo-Gothic Church of the Sacred Heart of Suffrage.

Along the way the audio guide, in English and six other languages, points out the bridges one by one, and the stretch near Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II opens some of the best views towards the dome of St Peter's Basilica. Open the guide on your phone using the link provided with your booking; no app is needed. Sit on the upper deck for photographs and choose the shaded lower deck when the midday sun is strong.

How the two-day hop-on hop-off pass works

Your pass is valid for two consecutive days of service between 10:00 and 18:00. Exchange your voucher at either Isola Tiberina or Castel Sant'Angelo, then board and leave the boat as often as you wish. Each departure time belongs to a specific boarding point, so check your voucher and ask the crew if your plans change; staff wear white tops and can help with any last-minute question.

Is it worth it? If you want a slow way to see Rome's bridges, skip the traffic between the Vatican area and the historic centre, and give children a calm break, then yes, but treat it as a scenic river link rather than a full-day tour. The best time to go is late afternoon in spring and autumn, when the light on the water is soft. Wheelchair users cannot board, and drugs and intoxicating substances are not allowed on the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

How much does the Tiber River hop-on hop-off ticket cost?

The price depends on the option you choose and on the age of each traveller. The booking panel on this page shows the current adult and child price for each option, so pick your date and you will see the total before you book.

How long is the boat ride?

The full round trip between Ponte Cestio and Ponte Pietro Nenni takes about one hour. Because the pass is hop-on hop-off, you can also split it into shorter legs and stop wherever you like.

How long is the ticket valid?

The pass is valid for two consecutive days of service, from 10:00 to 18:00 on each day, so you can use it on the day you start and again on the following day.

What is the difference between the two options?

Only the first boarding point changes: Castel Sant'Angelo or Isola Tiberina. Both give the same two days of unlimited hop-on hop-off travel, so choose the stage closest to where your day begins.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The boats leave from two landing stages on the river, so you make your own way to the stage shown on your voucher. Both are easy to reach on foot or by taxi from the centre.

Is the boat suitable for children?

Yes, the boat is calm and has two decks, which children usually enjoy. Age bands and child prices appear in the booking panel. Wheelchair users cannot board.

Is there an audio guide?

Yes. The audio guide is available in seven languages and opens on your own smartphone through a link, with no app to download. Bring headphones if you want to listen privately.

Can I book for today or tomorrow?

Yes, when departures are still available. Choose today's or tomorrow's date in the booking panel; availability is shown live, and you can confirm straight away.

What can I see from the Tiber boat?

You see Isola Tiberina, Castel Sant'Angelo, the dome of St Peter's Basilica, the Palace of Justice, the Neo-Gothic church of the Sacred Heart and a series of historic Tiber bridges.

What should I wear or bring?

Comfortable clothes, sunglasses and a hat in summer, and a light jacket for evenings. Bring your voucher on your phone and headphones for the audio guide.
