Overview

Just a short walk from the Colosseum lie two of ancient Rome’s favourite places for leisure: the giant Baths of Caracalla and the Circus Maximus. On this 90-minute English-language tour, a live archaeologist guide brings the ruins to life, with headsets so you hear every word and entry to the baths included. The default option is a small group of up to sixteen people, and a smaller group and private version are also available. It suits history lovers, families and anyone who wants Rome beyond the Colosseum.

  • Group, small-group and private choices, depending on the option

Full Description

The Baths of Caracalla

The Baths of Caracalla were built in the early third century AD and could hold well over a thousand bathers at a time. They were far more than a place to wash: the complex included hot and cold pools, gymnasia, libraries, gardens and shops, and it served as a social centre for ordinary Romans. Today the towering brick walls give a striking sense of scale. A Baths of Caracalla guided tour is the easiest way to make sense of the ruins.

Your guide explains the daily routine of a Roman bather, the underfloor heating system, called a hypocaust, and the way water was supplied. You also see mosaic floors and vast halls. Many famous sculptures, including the Farnese Hercules now in Naples, came from these baths. Allow about an hour here.

The Circus Maximus

From the baths you walk to the Circus Maximus, the largest stadium ever built in the ancient world. Set in a long valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills, it staged chariot races in front of a huge crowd, and its origins go back to the earliest legends of Rome. Today it is a wide green space, but its long shape still shows where the track ran.

Standing where the arena once stood, you hear about the “ludi”, the Roman games, with chariot racing, processions and spectacles that lasted several days. It is an excellent place to picture the noise and energy of ancient Rome, and it is only a few minutes from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

The Tour Options and Format

The tour lasts about ninety minutes: roughly an hour at the baths and thirty minutes at the Circus Maximus. The default option is a group tour in English of up to sixteen participants. A small-group option limits the group to ten, and a private tour is another choice; compare them in the booking panel.

Because headsets are included, everyone hears clearly, and the guide is a licensed archaeologist rather than a general guide, so you get deeper detail. Entry to the baths is included, so there is no separate ticket to buy, and on-site assistance is there if you need help.

Practical Tips

The meeting point is near Viale Aventino, close to the Circo Massimo metro station and a short distance from the Colosseum. Arrive five minutes early to complete sign-up. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring sun protection and water in summer, since much of the route is outdoors and shade is limited.

Trolleys, large backpacks, pets, strollers, weapons and drones are not allowed. Visitors under eighteen, and EU citizens under twenty-five, should carry an official ID or a digital copy. The tour may be cancelled in bad weather, when you can choose another date or a refund.
