Full Description

The Vittoriano Monument (Altare della Patria) in Piazza Venezia

The Vittoriano is the giant white monument that dominates Piazza Venezia, built between the 1880s and its inauguration in 1911 to honour Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of united Italy. Romans have nicknamed it the wedding cake and the typewriter, and its steps, columns and bronze quadrigas make it impossible to miss. Vittoriano Monument tickets give you access to the interior, where most passers-by never go.

Inside, you find the museum dedicated to the Italian unification story and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded day and night, on the terrace above the main steps. Our priority ticket is designed to save time, so you spend less time in queues and more time exploring the monument and its rooms.

The Panoramic Terrace and views over Rome

Many travellers ask whether the Panoramic Terrace of the Vittoriano is worth it, and for the views alone it is. From the top you see the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Trajan's Column on one side, and the domes of the city, including St Peter's, on the other. The terrace is one of the few places where the layers of ancient, medieval and modern Rome appear in a single photograph.

Go up shortly before sunset for warm light on the rooftops, or in the morning when the air is clearer. The terrace is open air, so a hat and sunscreen in summer and a jacket in winter are sensible. Opening hours and last entry change by season, so check the times shown in the booking panel.

Palazzo Venezia and the Vittoriano museum

Your ticket also covers Palazzo Venezia, a fifteenth-century palace beside the monument that was first a papal residence and later became famous for the balcony from which Mussolini addressed the crowds. Today it houses the National Museum of Palazzo Venezia, with medieval and Renaissance art, ceramics and weapons in beautiful historic rooms.

The Vittoriano museum tells the story of Italian unification through documents, uniforms and photographs. Together the two museums give a fuller picture of Rome's history than the terrace alone, and they are quiet, air-conditioned places to rest during a hot day of sightseeing.

How to get to the Vittoriano and plan your visit

The monument stands at the centre of Rome, so it is easy to reach by bus from most areas, and it is a walk from the Colosseum, the Capitoline Hill and the Trevi Fountain. Many visitors ask how to get to the Vittoriano; the simplest answer is to take a bus or a taxi to Piazza Venezia. Our host meets you at the marked meeting point shown by photo on your voucher.

Plan about an hour for the visit. This ticket does not include a guided tour or transport, but you can add the audio guide app option to explore each area at your own pace and hear the history, architecture and cultural meaning of the monument.
