Full Description
The Roman Forum and Capitoline Hill
The Roman Forum was the political and social centre of the ancient city, with temples, law courts and speaking platforms along the Via Sacra. Capitoline Hill rises beside it, and it was the religious heart of Rome, with the great temple of Jupiter, and today it holds the Capitoline Museums and a famous square.
On the Segway your guide leads you around this area with stops for views, explaining how the buildings worked and which emperors changed the skyline. You see the Forum from its edges rather than entering, so it is a good preview if you plan to visit the archaeological site another day.
The Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine
The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre ever built by the Romans, and it opened in AD 80 for gladiator combats and public spectacles. The tour spends time around the exterior with a longer stop, so you can look at the arches, the tiers and the surviving sections of marble.
Next to it stands the Arch of Constantine, which celebrates the victory of Emperor Constantine in the early fourth century. If you are wondering whether a Colosseum Segway tour is worth it, the ride shows you the scale of the monuments and their layout, while entry to the interior is not included and can be booked separately.
Circus Maximus and Aventine Hill
The Circus Maximus was Rome's largest chariot-racing track, and it is now an open park in a long valley between the Palatine and Aventine Hills. The Segway makes it easy to glide along its length and to imagine the crowds that once filled the stands.
Aventine Hill is a quieter, residential hill with gardens and viewpoints over the city, and the ride climbs there for a panoramic stop. It is one of the pleasant surprises of the tour, because it feels far from the crowds, and the guide explains the legends of the hill.
The Mouth of Truth and the Roman river district
Near the river, in the old cattle market area, stand the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin and the Mouth of Truth, a marble mask under its portico. Close by you find two well-preserved Roman temples, including the Temple of Hercules Victor, one of the oldest marble buildings in Rome.
These stops show the older, lesser-known side of Roman history, and the small group means everyone hears the guide. The route can change with traffic, events and road closures, and your guide chooses the best order on the day, so treat the stop list as a guide rather than a fixed schedule.
