Full Description

Bacalar Lagoon, the Lagoon of Seven Colours

Bacalar Lagoon is a long, narrow freshwater lagoon in the south of Quintana Roo, Mexico, fed by underground rivers and cenotes. Its white limestone bed and changing depths paint the water in bands of turquoise, aqua and deep blue, which is why locals call it the Lagoon of Seven Colours. The shallow shores are soft and sandy, while the cenotes drop into dark blue holes that look almost black from the board.

Is Bacalar worth visiting? For many travellers to the Mexican Caribbean it is the calmest and most photogenic stop of the trip, and a sunrise paddle is the best way to see it. Early in the morning there is little wind, almost no motorboat traffic and soft light on the water. On this tour you spend about three hours on the lagoon, paddling at an easy pace with regular stops for photos.

Island of the Birds (Isla de los Pájaros)

The Island of the Birds is a small mangrove island in the middle of Bacalar Lagoon that serves as a protected nesting and resting area for herons, egrets, cormorants and frigatebirds. Visitors are not allowed to land, which keeps the birds undisturbed, but paddling slowly around its edge at dawn is one of the most rewarding wildlife moments in the area.

This is where your guide sets up the floating picnic: a tray of healthy snacks, tropical fruit juice and water served on the water while the sun climbs over the mangroves. Take your time here for about half an hour, watch the birds leave their roosts and enjoy the silence. A small zoom lens or binoculars help, and please keep your voice low and stay at the distance the guide shows.

Lagoon Channels and Islands

Bacalar Lagoon is linked to nearby water bodies by narrow natural channels lined with mangroves. The best known is the Pirates' Channel, a historic route once used by pirates who raided the region in the colonial period. Today these channels are shallow, sheltered and full of colour, with white sand showing through water only knee-deep in places.

On the paddleboard you follow the guide past small islands and along these sheltered stretches, where the water is calmest and the light at sunrise reflects on the surface like glass. The exact route depends on wind and water levels on the day, and the guide chooses the most comfortable line for the group. It is a gentle paddle rather than a workout, and beginners usually find their balance within the first fifteen minutes.

Cenotes and Stromatolites of Bacalar

Several cenotes open directly into Bacalar Lagoon, including the deep Cenote Negro and Cenote Esmeralda, where the bottom falls away from a sandy shelf into dark blue water. Along the shores you may also notice grey, rock-like mounds: these are stromatolites, living colonies of microorganisms that are among the oldest life forms on Earth and are protected by law.

Your swim stop takes place in crystal-clear water near one of these cenotes, about twenty to thirty minutes in the water with a life jacket available. To protect the stromatolites, never stand or sit on them, and use only biodegradable sunscreen or none at all before swimming. The water is fresh, not salty, and usually pleasantly warm all year, so even a quick dip at sunrise feels refreshing.

Bacalar Town and How to Get There

Bacalar is a small lakeside town and one of Mexico's designated Magical Towns, known for its relaxed pace, colourful streets and the stone Fort of San Felipe, built in the eighteenth century to defend the area against pirates. The fort now holds a small museum and overlooks the lagoon, making it a good visit after your tour.

How to get to Bacalar: it lies about 40 minutes by road north of Chetumal, roughly two and a half hours south of Tulum and around four and a half hours from Cancun, so most visitors stay at least one night. The tour starts in town at 06:00, so we recommend a hotel in Bacalar itself. The best time to visit Bacalar is the dry season from November to April, although sunrise paddles run all year.
