Full Description

Historic Porto and Praça da Batalha

Porto's historic centre, listed by UNESCO in 1996, climbs steeply from the Douro river in a jumble of tiled facades, granite churches and narrow lanes. Praça da Batalha, the main boarding point, sits at the top of the old town near the blue-tiled Santo Ildefonso church and a short walk from Rua de Santa Catarina, the city's best-known shopping street.

From here the blue line runs down to the Cordoaria garden, the São Francisco Church with its gilded baroque interior, and the old customs house on the river. The night tour, included with 48-hour tickets, passes Avenida dos Aliados, São Bento Station with its famous blue-and-white tile panels and the Cathedral on its hill. It is the easiest way to see Porto's main sights without climbing every hill on foot.

Vila Nova de Gaia and the Dom Luís I bridge

The orange line crosses the Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia, the city on the south bank that faces Porto's Ribeira district. Its long riverside promenade, Cais de Gaia, has the classic postcard view of Porto: colourful houses stacked above the water, traditional river boats moored at the quay and the double-deck iron arch of the Dom Luís I bridge, opened in 1886.

Further up, the Jardim do Morro garden and the hilltop Serra do Pilar monastery give one of the best viewpoints in the region, especially at sunset. Hopping off at these stops is the simplest answer to how to get to Gaia from Porto without walking uphill, and it is where the river cruise boats moor along the quay.

Douro river cruise

With the most complete ticket you also enjoy a heritage river cruise on the Douro, on a boat inspired by the traditional rabelos that once carried goods down the river. The cruise follows the riverfront between Porto and Gaia and passes beneath the city's bridges, from the iron Dom Luís I bridge to the modern Ponte do Infante and beyond.

From the water you see the Ribeira district, the old city walls and the granite cliffs on which Porto is built, from a perspective you cannot get on land. A Douro river cruise in Porto is one of the city's most popular experiences, and including it in your bus ticket saves time on planning and queueing.

Boavista, Serralves and Foz do Douro

The blue line also heads west along Avenida da Boavista, passing the Crystal Palace Gardens with their peacocks and river views, and Casa da Música, a striking white concert hall shaped like a cut stone, opened in 2005. Further on you reach Serralves, a contemporary art museum set in a large park with an art deco villa and gardens.

The line ends at the Atlantic coast, at the City Park, the largest urban park in Portugal, the 17th-century Castelo do Queijo fort and Foz do Douro, the elegant seaside district where the river meets the ocean. Its promenade, lighthouse and breakwaters are perfect for a walk before you hop back on toward the centre.

Matosinhos, beach and seafront

The green line explores Matosinhos, a seaside town just north of Porto known for its wide sandy beach, its surfing waves and its restaurants serving grilled fresh fish. Stops include the beach, the Casa da Arquitectura in a former cannery, the old canning quarter that recalls the town's fishing past and the white, wave-shaped cruise terminal at the port.

On the seafront you also pass a huge suspended net sculpture floating above a roundabout, inspired by the fishing nets of the area. Including Matosinhos is what makes this Porto hop-on hop-off bus different from a simple city loop: in one ticket you see three cities, the river and the ocean.
