Full Description
The Rock of Gibraltar: a short history
The Rock of Gibraltar is a limestone promontory rising 426 metres above the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Its name comes from the Arabic Jabal Tariq, the Mountain of Tariq, after Tariq ibn Ziyad, who landed here in 711 at the start of the Muslim period in the Iberian Peninsula. The Rock passed between Moorish and Spanish rule for centuries and has been a British territory since 1713.
Today Gibraltar is a small, densely built town where English and Spanish mix in everyday life, red post boxes sit beside Andalusian balconies, and the pound is the local currency. Entering it is part of the adventure: the road crosses the airport runway right after the border. For anyone planning a Gibraltar day trip from Malaga, a guided tour is the easiest way to see the main sights in one day.
Europa Point and the Strait of Gibraltar
Europa Point is the southern tip of Gibraltar, where the Rock drops to the sea and the coast of Africa appears across the strait. On clear days you can see the mountains of Morocco and the Jebel Musa peak, which with the Rock formed the legendary Pillars of Hercules, once thought to mark the edge of the known world.
The headland is crowned by the Trinity Lighthouse, in service since 1841, and by a large white mosque opened in 1997 whose minaret is a landmark for ships entering the Mediterranean. Your guide explains the strategic importance of this narrow passage, which ships have navigated for thousands of years, and gives you time for photos of two continents in a single view.
St Michael's Cave
St Michael's Cave is the most visited natural attraction in Gibraltar, a network of limestone chambers in the Upper Rock about 300 metres above sea level. The main chamber, known as the Cathedral Cave, is filled with stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years, and is lit with changing colours that bring out the shapes of the rock. It has even been used as a concert hall thanks to its natural acoustics.
Legends once claimed the cave was bottomless and linked to Africa by a tunnel under the strait, which is how the monkeys were said to have arrived. During the Second World War it was prepared as an emergency hospital. Your St Michael's Cave entry is included, and you spend around half an hour inside; the paths are lit but can be damp, so wear shoes with good grip.
Upper Rock Nature Reserve and the Barbary macaques
Much of the top of the Rock is protected as the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, covered in Mediterranean scrub, wildflowers in spring and old military batteries and tunnels. From its viewpoints you look down on the town, the harbour and the Spanish coast, and on clear days far across to Africa. Migrating birds of prey pass overhead in spring and autumn.
The reserve is the territory of the Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe, which live in several groups on the Rock. They are used to people and often come close for photos, but they are wild animals: do not feed or touch them, keep bags closed and hold on to food and sunglasses. Seeing them is a highlight for many visitors and one of the reasons people ask whether Gibraltar is worth visiting.
Main Street, Casemates Square and the walled town
After the guided part of the tour you have free time in the historic centre. Casemates Square, once a barracks square, is now the lively gateway to the town, lined with cafés and restaurants. From here Main Street runs south through the old walled town, with shops selling VAT-free electronics, perfume, cosmetics and clothing, alongside historic buildings and small squares.
On the way you pass sights such as the Moorish Castle, whose 14th-century Tower of Homage still rises above the town, and the port where cruise ships and ferries dock. Shops accept pounds and usually euros, though change is often given in pounds. Use this time for lunch and a stroll before meeting your guide at the agreed time for the return trip.
