Full Description
The Benalmádena Cable Car
The Benalmádena cable car, known locally as the teleférico, is the only cable car on the Costa del Sol. From the lower station, modern cabins climb steadily up the slope of Mount Calamorro in around fifteen minutes, passing over pine trees, rocky ground and the town below, while the audio guide describes the sights in several languages.
The ride is smooth and comfortable, and the large windows give you views in every direction, so it works for people who are not used to heights as well as for photographers. A Benalmadena cable car ticket is valid for one day, and a return ride is the default option. Please check the operator's weather notices, because cable cars may pause in strong wind.
Mount Calamorro Summit and Hiking Trails
At the top of Mount Calamorro, at around 770 metres, there is a terrace with viewpoints and the start of several marked walking routes. The trails cross a Mediterranean mountain landscape of pines, scrub and rocky outcrops, with plants and wildlife typical of the area, including birds of prey soaring on the wind. There are around six routes to choose from, and they suit different levels of fitness.
Many visitors simply enjoy the terrace and a short walk, while keen walkers take a longer route. Wear sturdy shoes, as the paths are stony, and bring water and sun protection. Some parts of the summit are not accessible to people with reduced mobility because of the terrain, and a separate bird-of-prey presentation may be offered at the top.
Views over the Costa del Sol
The panorama is the reason most people ride the cable car. Below you the coast stretches from Malaga in the east to Fuengirola and Marbella in the west, with the marina and white buildings of Benalmadena in the foreground. On clear days you can make out the Rock of Gibraltar and the mountains of North Africa across the sea.
The best times for photographs are the morning, when the air is often clearest, and the late afternoon, when the light softens over the sea. Cloud and haze can hide the far views, so choose a clear day if you can. The cable car is one of the best things to do in Benalmadena on a sunny day and it is easy to fit into a morning or afternoon.
Combo Options and Practical Tips
Depending on the option you choose, you can add Selwo Marina, a leisure park of aquatic wildlife in Benalmadena, or both Selwo Marina and Selwo Aventura, a wildlife adventure park with more than two thousand animals. Combo tickets must be used on the same day, so plan the order of the visits and start early to fit everything in.
The cable car applies height rules to its tickets, and your confirmation explains them for adults and children; child tickets in the booking panel apply to ages 3 to 7. Small children need an adult with them, and folding wheelchairs can be taken on board. Arrive at the lower station a little before your planned time and check the operating hours for the day.
