Tarifa

Tarifa

Plan Tarifa with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

Stand on the old town walls of Tarifa on a clear morning and Africa looks close enough to touch. Across the Strait of Gibraltar, the Rif Mountains of Morocco rise blue above the water, ferries cut white wakes towards Tangier, and the wind, always the wind, sends a swirl of colourful kites dancing above the endless sand of Los Lances. Below, the whitewashed lanes slowly fill with the smell of fresh bread and coffee.

Tarifa at first sight

Tarifa is the southernmost town of mainland Europe, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean and two continents face each other across a narrow channel. Its compact old town, ringed by medieval walls and crowned by a castle, keeps the memory of centuries of Moorish rule. Around it lie wild dune beaches, Roman ruins and some of the best whale and dolphin watching in Europe.

Why include Tarifa in your itinerary?

  • Two continents in one trip. From Tarifa, the fast ferry reaches Tangier in about an hour, so you can wander a Moroccan medina, enjoy a Moroccan lunch and be back in Spain for dinner, a rare day that spans Europe and Africa.
  • Whales and dolphins in the Strait. The deep waters between Spain and Morocco are a highway for marine life, with dolphins and pilot whales seen through much of the year and, in season, sperm whales, fin whales and even orcas.
  • Wild beaches and endless wind. Los Lances, Valdevaqueros and Bolonia are among the most beautiful beaches in Spain, backed by great dunes and pine woods, and the steady wind makes Tarifa the kitesurfing and windsurfing capital of Europe.

Signature experiences in Tarifa

Day Trip to Tangier

Board the fast ferry in Tarifa port and, about an hour later, step ashore beside the medina of Tangier. Explore the kasbah with its views over the Strait, the lively squares of the Petit Socco and Grand Socco, and the busy souqs of spices, leather and textiles. Our guided day trips include the crossing, a local guide and a traditional Moroccan lunch, with halal food naturally on the table.

Whale and Dolphin Watching in the Strait

Head out from Tarifa harbour into the Strait of Gibraltar, where currents rich in food attract common, striped and bottlenose dolphins, playful pilot whales and, in season, sperm whales and fin whales. In July and August, orcas sometimes follow the bluefin tuna. Our marine-life cruises run with experienced crews and naturalists who explain the behaviour of each species and respect the animals' space.

The Old Town and the Castle

Enter the old town through the Puerta de Jerez, the medieval gate in the walls, and lose yourself in whitewashed lanes, small squares and flower-filled patios. Visit the tenth-century castle built by the caliphs of Córdoba, walk its battlements for views over the port and Africa, and pause at the Church of San Mateo and the neo-Moorish market hall, where fishermen sell the morning catch.

Bolonia Beach and Baelo Claudia

About twenty-five minutes west of Tarifa, the bay of Bolonia hides one of the most complete Roman towns in Spain, Baelo Claudia, where temples, a theatre and the vats of a fish-salting industry stand right beside the beach. Climb the giant white dune at the end of the bay for sweeping views, then swim in clear Atlantic water against a backdrop of green hills.

Kitesurfing, Dunes and the Southern Tip

Watch the kitesurfers fly above Los Lances and Valdevaqueros, or take a beginner's lesson with a licensed school when the wind is right. Climb the Punta Paloma dune for a view of the coast, and walk the causeway towards the Isla de las Palomas, the very southern tip of mainland Europe, where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet in a line of differing waves.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Tarifa

The Old Town

Inside the medieval walls, the old town is the heart of Tarifa, a maze of whitewashed lanes with boutique hotels, guesthouses, cafés and small restaurants. It is the most atmospheric area to stay, close to the castle, the market and the port for the Tangier ferry. It is safe and lively in the evening, though the narrow streets have little room for cars.

Los Lances and the Town Beach

Just west of the old town, the long avenue behind Los Lances beach is lined with apartments, hotels, surf shops and cafés. Staying here puts the sand and the promenade on your doorstep, with the old town a short stroll away. It suits families, beach lovers and anyone who wants to watch the kitesurfers from the window.

Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma

Along the coast road to the north-west, Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma are scattered with small hotels, holiday houses and campsites among pine woods and dunes. It is the favourite area of kitesurfers and nature lovers, peaceful and spacious, with spectacular sunsets. A car or private transfer is useful, as the town is about fifteen minutes away.

Bolonia

The tiny village of Bolonia, about twenty-five minutes by road from Tarifa, sits in a protected bay beside the Roman ruins and the great dune. It offers a handful of simple guesthouses and fish restaurants and no big hotels. It suits couples and travellers seeking total calm, starry nights and early mornings on an empty beach.

How long to stay in Tarifa and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend three nights in Tarifa. Spend one day on the old town, the castle and the beaches, one full day on the Tangier day trip, and a third on a whale and dolphin cruise and Bolonia. With four or five nights, add Vejer de la Frontera, more beach time or a kitesurfing lesson.

How to pair it

Tarifa pairs naturally with Cádiz, about an hour and a quarter by road, for its ancient seafront old town, and with the white hill village of Vejer de la Frontera on the way. In a week, add Seville, around two and a half hours away, for its cathedral and Alcázar. With ten days, continue to Ronda, Málaga and Granada to complete a classic journey through Andalusia.

Best time to visit Tarifa and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The best time to visit Tarifa is from May to June and in September and October, when days are warm, beaches are calmer and whale and dolphin sightings are frequent. July and August are hot and busy, the best months for orcas and beach life. Winter is mild but windy, and strong easterly winds can sometimes cancel ferries and boat trips on any date.

The daily rhythm

Tarifa's day follows the wind and the sun. Mornings suit the Tangier ferry, whale cruises or a stroll in the old town, while afternoons are for the beaches and watching the kites. Lunch is late, around two or three, and evenings bring a sunset on Los Lances and dinner in the old town lanes. Halal food is easy across the Strait in Tangier; in Tarifa, look for the few Moroccan-run eateries, with fresh fish and the local bluefin tuna everywhere.

On-the-ground logistics in Tarifa

Arrival

The closest airports are Gibraltar (GIB), about forty-five minutes away including the border crossing, and Jerez (XRY), about an hour and a quarter by road. Málaga (AGP) and Seville (SVQ) offer more flights and are around two to two and a half hours away. Trains reach Algeciras, about thirty minutes from Tarifa. We arrange private transfers from the airport, Algeciras station or Tarifa port straight to your hotel.

Getting around

The old town, the port and Los Lances beach are all within easy walking distance. Local buses link Tarifa with Algeciras, Cádiz and the coast, and in summer a shuttle runs along the beaches. For Bolonia, Valdevaqueros, the Strait viewpoint or Vejer de la Frontera, a private car with driver arranged by our team is the easiest and most comfortable choice.

Local etiquette tip

Tarifa is easy-going and international, with a relaxed surf spirit. Swimwear belongs on the beach; cover up in the old town, shops and churches. Respect the protected dunes by staying on marked paths, and never disturb whales or dolphins. For the Tangier day trip, carry your passport, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and ask before photographing people in Morocco.
