Full Description
Setenil, the village under the rock
Setenil is one of the most unusual villages in Spain. Instead of building on the hills, its people tucked their houses beneath the overhanging rock ledges of the Trejo river gorge, so that whole streets have a ceiling of stone. The two best-known lanes, Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra, are lined with whitewashed houses, small shops and terraces sheltered by the cliff.
Above the village stand the remains of a Moorish fortress that held out until 1484. Your hour in Setenil is enough to walk the main rock streets, climb to the church and the castle tower for the view, and stop for a coffee in the shade of the cliff. Many visitors searching for the white villages of Andalusia name Setenil as their favourite.
Ronda and the El Tajo gorge
Ronda sits on a plateau about 740 metres above sea level, split in two by the El Tajo gorge, a chasm more than 100 metres deep cut by the Guadalevín river. On both sides, white houses and palaces stand right on the edge of the cliffs, with sweeping views over the farmland and the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda.
Ronda has inspired travellers and writers for centuries, and it is one of the most visited towns in Andalusia. With about three and a half hours of free time, this Ronda day trip from Malaga gives you enough time to see the main sights, have lunch and still enjoy the views without rushing. Because of the altitude, Ronda is often cooler than the coast, especially in winter.
The Puente Nuevo
The Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, is the symbol of Ronda. Completed in 1793 after about four decades of work, it spans the gorge on massive stone piers rising almost 100 metres from the river below, linking the old Moorish town with the newer district. A small room inside the central arch once served as a prison and now holds a little exhibition.
The best views of the bridge come from the viewpoints on both sides of the gorge and from the paths that lead down into the valley, a short walk from the centre. Morning light is soft on the stone, while late afternoon lights up the cliffs in warm colours. Photographing the Puente Nuevo is the moment most visitors remember from their trip to Ronda.
Ronda old town and its viewpoints
Across the bridge lies La Ciudad, the old town, with roots in the Moorish period. Its narrow streets lead to palaces, churches and the Arab Baths, among the best preserved in Spain, near the older Puente Viejo and the small Arab bridge. Gardens such as those of the Mondragón Palace and the Casa del Rey Moro offer quiet corners with views over the gorge.
On the newer side, the Alameda del Tajo park ends at a balcony hanging over the cliff, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Andalusia. With free time you can choose your own route, visit a museum or simply sit in a square with lunch. Entrance fees are not included, so you pay only for what you choose to visit.
The drive through the Andalusian countryside
The road from the coast climbs into the hills behind the Costa del Sol, through rolling fields of olive trees, cork oaks and small white villages clinging to the slopes. It is a scenic two-hour journey each way in a comfortable air-conditioned coach, with time to enjoy the landscape from your seat.
Many travellers ask how to get to Ronda from Malaga without driving. Public transport is slow and Setenil is hard to reach without a car, so a coach trip like this combines both towns easily in one day, without worrying about mountain roads or parking. Return to Malaga is in the early evening, in time for dinner, and the coast stops are served on the way back as well.
