Full Description

The Caves of Nerja

The Caves of Nerja were discovered in 1959 by a group of local boys exploring a hole in the hillside, and they have since become one of the most impressive cave systems in Spain. The visitor route passes through huge chambers hung with stalactites and stalagmites, and the Cataclysm Hall holds one of the largest cave columns in the world, rising around thirty metres. The temperature is mild all year, so a Nerja Caves day trip from Malaga suits every season.

The caves also hold signs of prehistoric life, including cave paintings and remains that show people used them tens of thousands of years ago. Your visit includes a physical audio guide, and entry to the museum with its artefacts and virtual reality room. If you are looking for Cueva de Nerja tickets, choosing a guided tour saves you queueing and organising transport, and the caves are also used for a summer music festival.

Frigiliana, One of Andalusia's Prettiest Villages

Frigiliana sits on a hillside in the Axarquía region, with the Sierra de Almijara behind and the sea in front. Its old Moorish quarter, the Barribarto, is a maze of steep cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses, blue pots and bright bougainvillea, and it is regularly named among the most beautiful villages in the province. A Frigiliana tour from Malaga is a favourite for photographers.

Along the streets, ceramic panels tell the story of the village, including the 16th-century Morisco rebellion whose last stand was fought on the nearby crag. Our guide leads a walk through the main sights and then leaves time for you to wander freely, look into small craft shops and enjoy the views. Comfortable shoes are important, as the lanes are steep in places.

Nerja and the Balcón de Europa

Nerja is a former fishing village that has grown into a relaxed seaside town without losing its old centre. Its best-known landmark is the Balcón de Europa, a terrace built on a headland with palm trees and a promenade. On a clear day you can see the Sierra de Almijara, the Mediterranean and even the coast of Africa, and there is a statue of King Alfonso XII, who is said to have named the terrace.

You have free time in Nerja to walk the old streets, look at the church of El Salvador and stroll the beaches below the promenade, which are small coves with clear water. It is a pleasant place to end the day, and the visit shows why the Balcón de Europa is such a popular place for things to do in Nerja.

Route and Practical Tips for the Day Trip

Nerja and Frigiliana lie about an hour by road east of Malaga, along the coast of the Axarquía, and the route has panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the mountains. Our coach leaves from a central meeting point in Malaga, so there is no need to work out how to get to Nerja from Malaga or where to park. The trip lasts about nine hours in all.

The best time to visit is spring and autumn, but the cave stays cool in summer, so it is also a good escape from the heat. Bring comfortable shoes, a light jacket for the cave and water for the walks. Lunch is not included, so use your free time in Nerja or Frigiliana to eat. Opening hours change by season, and the order of stops can change on the day.
