Full Description
The Segura River and its rafting route
The Segura rises in the mountains of Jaén and flows across the Murcia region to the Mediterranean. Between Cieza and Blanca it runs through a green corridor of reeds, poplars and orchards, with enough current, rapids and small weirs to make an exciting yet safe descent. This rafting in Murcia route is the longest commercially run on the river, with about two and three-quarter hours on the water split into two sections.
The first section, of about one and a half hours, is the most lively, with rapids that splash the whole raft. After the picnic break, the second section of about 75 minutes mixes fun drops with calmer water where you can look up at the hills and listen to the birds. Guides steer from the back and explain every manoeuvre, so no experience is needed.
Blanca and the canoe club base
Blanca is a small town on a bend of the Segura, overlooked by the remains of a medieval castle tower on its rocky hill. The local canoe club has run descents here since 1990 and its base sits right by the river, with wooden tables in the shade and a white building with changing rooms, showers and lockers. This is where you meet, change into swimwear and sportswear, and receive your safety equipment.
Arrive at least ten minutes before your start time. The descent ends back in Blanca, so you can shower, change and relax before driving on. Blanca is about 40 minutes by road from the city of Murcia, and most visitors come by car; the meeting point is easy to find on a map.
El Jarral Dam park picnic stop
Halfway down the river, the rafts pull in at the park beside the El Jarral Dam, a shaded riverside area with grass and trees. Here you have about 30 minutes to rest, eat the included sandwich with a drink and take photos of the river and the old weir. It is a welcome pause between the two sections and a good moment to chat with your guide about the valley.
Children especially enjoy this break, which keeps the activity relaxed for families. Remember that the picnic is light, so you may want to plan a proper lunch in Blanca or a nearby village after the activity. The park is also a pleasant spot for a short walk along the bank while the guides prepare the rafts for the second section.
The Ricote valley and Cieza
The stretch of river you paddle belongs to the wider Ricote valley, a landscape of terraced orchards, palm groves and lemon trees shaped by centuries of irrigation. Old water wheels and channels still feed the fields, and the white villages cling to the slopes above the river. Upstream, Cieza is known across Spain for the pink peach blossom that covers its plain each spring.
The best time to go rafting on the Segura is from spring to early autumn, when the water and the air are warm. In midsummer, the morning departure is the most comfortable, while the afternoon one offers golden light for the photos. Ask your guide to point out the old irrigation channels and water wheels as you paddle past.
