Overview

This timed entry ticket opens the doors of the Theatre-Museum in Figueres, one of the most visited museums in Spain and the largest collection of works by the surrealist painter who was born in this small town. The ticket also covers the jewellery collection and rotating exhibitions. You explore at your own pace for about 1.5 to 2 hours. It suits art lovers, curious families with older children and anyone on a day trip from Barcelona or the Costa Brava.

Full Description

The Figueres Theatre-Museum building

The Theatre-Museum stands on the site of the 19th-century municipal theatre of Figueres, where the young painter showed his work for the first time and which was left in ruins by a fire at the end of the Spanish Civil War. Decades later the artist rebuilt it as his own museum, opening it in 1974 as a single, enormous surrealist artwork. From outside you see deep red walls studded with golden ornaments shaped like loaves of bread, giant white eggs along the roof line and golden figures holding long poles.

Is the Figueres Theatre-Museum worth visiting? Even before you step inside, the building shows why it is one of the most original museums in Europe. Arrive a few minutes before your time slot to admire the facade and the square in front, where performers and statues add to the theatrical mood.

The stage, the dome and the inner courtyard

Inside, the old stalls of the theatre have become an open-air courtyard filled with sculptures, where a black vintage car stands under a tower of tyres crowned by a boat; drop a coin and it starts to rain inside the car. Around the courtyard, the original boxes and balconies are decorated with golden figures that look down on the visitors like a strange audience.

Beyond the courtyard rises the former stage, covered by the glass geodesic dome that has become the symbol of the museum. Beneath this space lies the crypt where the artist chose to be buried, a quiet moment in an otherwise playful visit. Huge canvases hang on the stage walls, and from here you continue into the rooms that wrap around the building on several floors.

Optical illusions, installations and the jewellery collection

The museum is designed to surprise. In one room, a sofa shaped like lips, a fireplace and two framed paintings come together to form a woman's face when you look through a lens from a raised platform. Elsewhere, huge paintings turn into portraits when seen from a distance, ceilings open onto painted skies and stereoscopic works create 3D effects. Children and adults alike enjoy hunting for the hidden images.

Your ticket also includes the jewellery collection, shown in a dedicated space next to the main building. Here the surrealist ideas are made in gold, rubies, emeralds and pearls: a beating heart, a pair of lips with pearl teeth, an eye that tells the time. Rotating exhibitions add works by other artists, so even returning visitors find something new. Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for the whole visit.

Figueres and how to get there

Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà region, close to the French border and the northern Costa Brava. Beyond the museum, the town has a lively tree-lined Rambla, a toy museum and, on the hill above the centre, an enormous 18th-century star-shaped fortress, one of the largest military buildings in Europe. Medieval villages and the coast at Cadaqués and Roses are less than an hour away by car.

If you are planning a Figueres day trip from Barcelona, the high-speed train takes about 55 minutes to Figueres Vilafant station, a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride from the museum, while slower regional trains stop at the central station. Girona is about 30 minutes away. Figueres Theatre-Museum tickets often sell out in summer, so booking your time slot in advance is the best way to secure entry.
