Full Description

Flamenco, the art of Andalusia

Flamenco was born in Andalusia from a meeting of cultures: the Roma communities, Andalusian folk songs, and echoes of the music of the Moorish era. It took its classic form in the 19th century in the cafés and small venues of Seville, Cádiz, Jerez and Málaga, and in 2010 UNESCO declared it part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

A flamenco show has three pillars: the cante, or song, the toque, or guitar, and the baile, or dance, held together by rhythmic hand-clapping and the stamping of heels. Artists perform different styles, called palos, some deep and sorrowful, others light and festive. When the performers reach a moment of pure emotion, flamenco lovers call it duende, the spirit that makes the hair on your arms stand up.

An intimate flamenco venue in Marbella old town

Flamenco is at its best in small spaces, and this venue in Marbella keeps the audience close to the stage. The room seats only a small number of guests, so you see the expressions of the dancers, the flying ruffles of their dresses and the fingers of the guitarist. The performers work without a script, improvising with each other in the traditional way, so the energy changes from night to night.

The show deliberately avoids modern technology, using only voices, guitar, hands and feet, just as flamenco sounded in its golden age. That makes it one of the most authentic flamenco shows on the Costa del Sol. Flash photography is not allowed, out of respect for the artists, so enjoy the moment and take a few quiet photos at the end.

Marbella old town by night

The venue lies in the upper part of the Casco Antiguo, Marbella's old town, a maze of whitewashed lanes decorated with flower pots and blue-tiled street signs. At its heart is the Plaza de los Naranjos, a square of orange trees laid out at the end of the 15th century, with the old town hall and a Renaissance fountain. Nearby stand the Church of the Incarnation and remains of the medieval walls.

In the evening the old town fills with families and couples dining on small terraces, which makes it a lovely place to walk before or after the show. Is Marbella old town worth visiting at night? Yes: it is cooler, the lanes are softly lit, and a flamenco show adds the perfect cultural touch to your evening.

Show times, tickets and practical tips
