Full Description

The Caminito del Rey, Spain's famous cliff walkway

The Caminito del Rey was built between 1901 and 1905 so that workers could move between the hydroelectric plants at the northern and southern ends of the gorge, and it was officially opened in 1921 at the inauguration of the nearby dam. For decades it slowly crumbled, and by the end of the 20th century it had become known as one of the most dangerous paths in the world. After a complete restoration it reopened in 2015 with new wooden boardwalks fixed above the old concrete path, which you can still see beneath your feet.

Today the full route is about 7.7 kilometres, with almost 3 kilometres of boardwalk clinging to the rock. It is linear and runs one way, from north to south. Is the Caminito del Rey worth visiting? For most travellers it is one of the most memorable walks in Andalusia, safe and well maintained yet thrilling.

The Gaitanes Gorge and the hanging footbridge

The Desfiladero de los Gaitanes is a deep limestone gorge carved by the Guadalhorce river. In places the walls rise several hundred metres and the gap between them narrows to just ten metres, so the boardwalk seems to float in the air. Look down to the rushing green water and up to the jagged peaks, where griffon vultures often glide on the warm air.

The highlight comes near the end: a metal footbridge that hangs across the gorge about 100 metres above the river. Crossing it is exciting but stable, and it offers the best photos of the walk. Nearby you can see the old aqueduct and the railway that runs through tunnels in the rock, still used by trains between Málaga and Córdoba.

The Valle del Hoyo between the two gorges

The walk is divided into two narrow gorges joined by a wide, open valley called the Valle del Hoyo. Here the route leaves the cliffs and follows a gentle path through pine trees, almond trees and wild herbs, with fossils of ancient sea creatures visible in the rock. It is a good moment to drink water, take a breath and listen to your guide explain the geology and history of the area.

Your guide sets an easy pace, so the walk suits anyone in reasonable health who is comfortable with heights. The guided section takes about three hours. The best time to visit the Caminito del Rey is in spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild; in summer the morning departure is cooler, and the gorge is closed on Mondays and in very strong wind.

El Chorro and the Guadalhorce reservoirs

El Chorro is a small village at the southern end of the gorge, famous among climbers for its limestone walls. On the drive to the start of the route you pass the Guadalhorce reservoirs, a chain of lakes surrounded by pine forest whose water turns bright turquoise in the sun. These lakes, near the village of Ardales, are a favourite summer swimming and picnic area for families from Málaga.

If you wonder how to get to the Caminito del Rey without a car, this day trip solves the puzzle: access roads are narrow, parking is limited and tickets often sell out weeks ahead. With this Caminito del Rey tour from the Costa del Sol, your transport, Caminito del Rey tickets and guide are arranged in one booking, and your guide keeps the group together from start to finish.
