Full Description
The Guadalmina river canyon in Benahavís
The Guadalmina river rises in the Sierra Bermeja and the Serranía de Ronda and runs down to the Mediterranean between Marbella and San Pedro de Alcántara. Just above the village of Benahavís it has cut a narrow gorge through the rock, known locally as Las Angosturas, where the walls close in, the water turns emerald and smooth boulders form slides and natural pools. It is one of the most popular canyoning spots on the Costa del Sol because it is beautiful, accessible and suitable for beginners.
On this Guadalmina canyoning tour you move through the gorge on foot and by swimming, following your instructor from pool to pool. The route is short enough for first-timers yet varied, with calm stretches where you float on your back and look up at the cliffs, and faster sections where the river squeezes between the rocks.
Jumps, slides and the abseil
The heart of the experience is the series of jumps into deep, clear pools. Your instructor checks the depth of each one and shows you exactly where to land, and you choose whether to jump from a low ledge, a higher rock or not at all. Nothing is mandatory, so nervous beginners and confident adventurers can enjoy the same canyon at their own level.
At one point the route meets a vertical rock wall, and here you learn to abseil. The instructors fit your harness, explain the technique on the ground and then control the rope from above while you walk backwards down the wall. For many travellers this abseil in Benahavís is the proudest moment of the day, and the photographers make sure it is captured in the free photo report.
Benahavís, the mountain village above Marbella
Benahavís is a small white village tucked into the hills about seven kilometres inland from the coast. Its name comes from the Moorish period, and it still has narrow lanes, flower-filled balconies and the remains of an old watchtower above the river. Today it is known across the Costa del Sol for its many restaurants, which make it a good place to eat after your canyoning session.
If you are wondering how to get to Benahavís, take the A-7 coast road west from Marbella towards San Pedro de Alcántara and follow the signs inland; the drive is about 15 minutes by car or taxi. The exact canyon meeting point is sent with your booking confirmation, and there is space to park nearby.
Safety, equipment and the best time to go
Canyoning is an adventure sport, so safety is built into every step. Each group has internationally certified instructors, a maximum of 12 participants per guide and top-quality equipment: a full-length 5 mm wetsuit that keeps you warm in the mountain water, a certified helmet and a harness with extra protection for sliding. Insurance is included, and a full briefing comes before you enter the water.
The best time for canyoning in Marbella is from late spring to early autumn, when the days are warm and the water is pleasant with a wetsuit. Summer weekends are busy, so booking ahead is wise. The morning session offers softer light and fewer people, while the afternoon session is ideal if you prefer warmer air after the swim. Sessions depend on river levels and weather.
