Overview

This small-group sailing trip leaves Puerto Banús, the famous marina of Marbella, on a real sailing yacht to look for wild dolphins along the Costa del Sol. The default option is a shared 2.5-hour summer sail on a large, modern family sailboat, with departures in the morning, afternoon or early evening. A professional local skipper who speaks English and Spanish switches off the engine and sails with the wind whenever conditions allow, follows dolphin sightings and stops for a swim and a go on the paddle board when the sea is calm. Soft drinks, water and light snacks are included. Hotel pickup is not included: you meet the crew at the marina. Shorter shared sails and private boats are also available.

Full Description

Puerto Banús marina

Puerto Banús is the most famous marina on the Costa del Sol, opened in 1970 just west of Marbella in the district of Nueva Andalucía. Its waterfront is lined with designer boutiques, restaurants and gleaming yachts, while white Andalusian-style buildings with balconies look over the berths. Many visitors come simply to walk along the quay in the evening, but the best way to see Puerto Banús is from the water as you sail out past the harbour wall.

Your sailing trip starts at a pontoon inside the marina, and the exact berth is sent after booking. Puerto Banús is about 10 minutes by car or taxi from central Marbella, and buses run along the coast road. There are paid car parks around the port, so arrive a little early to find a space and stroll the waterfront before boarding.

Dolphin watching off Marbella

The waters between Marbella and the Strait of Gibraltar are among the richest in the western Mediterranean, because cool Atlantic water flows in and brings plenty of fish. Common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and striped dolphins live here, and pods often appear within a few miles of the coast, sometimes riding the bow wave or leaping beside the boat. Dolphin watching in Marbella is possible all year, although sightings are never guaranteed with wild animals.

The skipper knows the areas where dolphins usually feed and adapts the route to sea conditions and recent sightings. When a pod appears, the boat slows down and keeps a respectful distance so the animals can behave naturally. Children love these moments, and the longer 2.5-hour summer departure gives you more time to search and to watch.

Sailing along the Golden Mile and the Costa del Sol

Whenever the wind allows, the engine is switched off and the yacht glides along with only the sound of the waves and the sails. From the sea you get a wide view of the Costa del Sol: the beaches of Nueva Andalucía, the villas and gardens of the Golden Mile between Puerto Banús and Marbella town, and the grey limestone peak of La Concha in the Sierra Blanca mountains rising behind.

The atmosphere on board is relaxed and personal because groups are small. You can sit on deck in the sun, ask the skipper about sailing and the coast, or simply enjoy the calm. Is a Marbella sailing trip worth it? For many travellers it is the most peaceful two and a half hours of their stay, far from the busy beaches.

Swimming and paddle boarding in the Mediterranean

When the sea is calm, the skipper anchors in a quiet spot for a swim stop. You can dive straight from the boat into the clear blue water, float in the sun or try the paddle board, which is included in the trip. The water off Marbella is pleasant from June to October, when it often reaches 22 to 25 degrees, so the summer departures are perfect for a swim.

After the swim, soft drinks, water and light snacks such as crisps, nuts and olives are served on deck. The best time to visit Marbella for a sailing trip is from May to October, when the sea is warm and the light is long. The early-evening summer departure is especially beautiful, as the sun lowers over the mountains on the way back to port.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

The default option is a shared small-group sail. If you want the whole sailboat or catamaran for your group, choose one of the private options in the booking panel.

How long does the trip take?

The default summer sail lasts about 2.5 hours. Other shared options last about 2 hours.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You meet the skipper at Puerto Banús marina, and we send the exact pontoon when we confirm your booking.

What is included?

The sailing trip from Puerto Banús, a professional skipper, the search for dolphins, a swim stop with paddle board use when the sea allows, soft drinks, water, light snacks and fuel.

Is the price per person or per group?

Shared sails are priced per person with a lower price for children aged 2 to 14, while private sails are priced per boat. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Will we definitely see dolphins in Marbella?

Dolphins are seen on many trips, but they are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed. The skipper uses local knowledge and recent sightings to give you the best chance.

Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?

Children from 2 years are welcome, and families enjoy the swim stop and the dolphins. Boarding a sailboat requires stepping from the pontoon, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, flat shoes and a light jacket for the breeze.

What is the best time of day for dolphin watching?

Dolphins can appear at any time. Morning trips are often calmer, while the early-evening departure in summer offers softer light and a beautiful return to port.

What happens in bad weather?

If strong wind or rough sea make the trip unsafe, the skipper may change the route, shorten the swim stop or cancel. In that case we offer another date or a full refund.

Can I get seasick on a sailboat?

Sailboats move gently with the wind, but if you are prone to seasickness, take your usual remedy before boarding and stay on deck looking at the horizon.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your option, date and time in the booking panel and complete your booking. Our team confirms it on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the pontoon details.
