Full Description
The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
Founded in 1973, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is one of the most prestigious riding schools in the world, devoted to training horses and riders in classical dressage and preserving the equestrian heritage of Andalusia. It occupies leafy grounds in the centre of Jerez de la Frontera, around a 19th-century French-style palace, with stables, training rings, museums and an impressive indoor arena.
The arena, built in traditional Andalusian style with arches, balconies and a large central floor of sand, is where the school's shows and training sessions take place. A Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art show is the best way to see the results of years of patient work between rider and horse, and many travellers come to Jerez especially for it.
How the Andalusian Horses Dance
The show is often described as an equestrian ballet. Over about an hour and a half, a series of choreographies presents the different disciplines of the school: classical dressage with its precise, rhythmic steps; work in hand and on long reins, where the rider walks behind the horse; elegant carriage driving with beautifully harnessed teams; and the traditional riding style of the Andalusian countryside, born from work with cattle.
The highlight for many visitors is high-school dressage, when horses perform elevated movements on the spot or in the air, demonstrating strength and balance. The riders wear costumes inspired by 18th-century Andalusian dress, and every number is set to Spanish music, from classical pieces to traditional melodies. Is the Jerez horse show worth it? Few performances anywhere combine sport, art and tradition so gracefully.
The Andalusian horse
The stars of the show are Andalusian horses, known officially as the Pura Raza Española, one of the oldest horse breeds in Europe. Strong yet graceful, with arched necks, long manes and a calm temperament, they were the prized horses of European courts for centuries. Around Jerez, monks of the local charterhouse carefully bred a famous line of these horses from the 15th century onwards, and the city remains its heartland.
In the show you see why the breed is so suited to dressage: its natural elevation, agility and willingness to learn. Grey, bay and black horses perform side by side, their manes braided and their tack decorated in traditional style. After the show, you can visit the school grounds on another ticket to learn more about the horses and their care.
Jerez de la Frontera
Jerez de la Frontera is a lively Andalusian city known for horses and flamenco, with a historic centre of whitewashed palaces, churches and squares. Its Alcázar, a 12th-century fortress, still keeps its walls, a small mosque converted into a chapel, Moorish baths and gardens, and the Baroque cathedral rises nearby. Every spring the city hosts a famous horse fair, when riders and carriages fill the streets.
If you are planning a day trip from Seville to Jerez, the train takes about an hour, and Cádiz is about 35 minutes away. The school is a short walk or taxi ride from the station and the old town. Arrive in the morning to collect your ticket calmly, enjoy the show at midday, then spend the afternoon exploring the Alcázar and the old streets.
