Full Description
The Basilica and La Moreneta, the Black Madonna
The Basilica of Montserrat stands at the heart of the monastery, its dark, richly decorated nave lit by hanging lamps. Rebuilt after French troops destroyed much of the monastery in 1811, it is still a living place of worship where the monks celebrate Mass daily (Monday to Saturday at 11:00, Sundays and holidays at 9:30). The audio guide explains the architecture, the side chapels and the history of the community.
Above the high altar sits La Moreneta, a Romanesque wooden statue of the Virgin and Child from the 12th century, darkened over the centuries and venerated as the patron of Catalonia. Visitors reach her through a passage of mosaics and chapels to the throne room, where you can stand before the statue. The time you select when booking is your entry slot for this visit, which spares you the longest queue of the day.
The Museum of Montserrat
The Museum of Montserrat is one of the most surprising collections in Catalonia. Its archaeology section of the ancient Near East includes objects from Mesopotamia, the Holy Land and Egypt, among them a mummy and its sarcophagus, collected by the monks over generations. Another gallery holds Byzantine icons, gold and silverwork and liturgical objects from the monastery's treasury.
The painting collection spans Italian Renaissance and Baroque masters, French Impressionist landscapes and Catalan modern art from the late 19th and 20th centuries, alongside temporary exhibitions. Allow at least an hour to see the highlights. The museum sits on the main square of the sanctuary, a few steps from the Basilica, so it is easy to visit before or after your timed slot.
The Montserrat Audiovisual Space
The renovated Audiovisual Space is the best place to start your visit, as it explains in an engaging way the three pillars of Montserrat: the mountain, the monastery and the sanctuary. Through films, interactive displays and recreated spaces you learn how the extraordinary rock formations were created from ancient river deposits, how the Benedictine community lives and works, and why pilgrims have climbed here for centuries.
A visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes and is ideal for families, as children enjoy the multimedia displays. It also covers the Escolania, the boys' choir of Montserrat, one of the oldest music schools in Europe; their short performance in the Basilica is not included in this ticket, so check the schedule on the day if you want to hear them.
Getting to Montserrat and Planning Your Visit
How to get to Montserrat from Barcelona: take the R5 train from Plaça d'Espanya to Monistrol de Montserrat and change to the rack railway, or get off at Aeri de Montserrat for the cable car; the journey takes around 1 hour 15 minutes. By car it is about an hour, with parking at the foot of the monastery. Once there, the Sant Joan and Santa Cova funiculars lead to walking trails and viewpoints.
Is Montserrat worth visiting? For most travellers it is the finest day trip from Barcelona, combining spirituality, art and mountain scenery. The best time to visit Montserrat is early morning or late afternoon, which is why the La Moreneta slots on this ticket start at 08:30 or from 15:45. Montserrat opening hours vary by season, so plan around the Mass times and your slot.
