After free time for lunch you head south to Setenil de las Bodegas, the white village whose houses sit beneath huge rock overhangs, and end the day in Ronda, perched on both sides of a dramatic gorge spanned by the Puente Nuevo. Full Description

Córdoba's historic quarter

Córdoba was the capital of al-Andalus, and in the tenth century, as the seat of a caliphate, it was one of the largest and most learned cities in Europe. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a maze of whitewashed lanes, flower-filled courtyards and small squares around the old Jewish quarter, the Judería, with the Roman bridge stretching across the Guadalquivir just below.

On this Córdoba day trip from Seville your guide leads a walk of about 75 minutes through the most atmospheric corners of the old town, explaining how Muslims, Jews and Christians shaped the city. Afterwards you have about 75 minutes of free time for lunch, enough to try local dishes such as salmorejo or flamenquín in one of the small restaurants around the Mosque-Cathedral.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba

The Mosque-Cathedral is the monument that brings most travellers to Córdoba. Begun in 785 under the Umayyad emirs and enlarged over two centuries, the prayer hall became a vast forest of marble, granite and jasper columns topped by double arches striped in red brick and white stone. Its mihrab, decorated with golden Byzantine-style mosaics, is one of the finest works of Islamic art in Europe. After 1236 the building became a church, and in the sixteenth century a Renaissance cathedral nave was built in its centre.

With the default option your Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba tickets are included, so you enter with the guide instead of queuing for tickets. If you choose the option without entry, you still see the exterior, the Courtyard of the Orange Trees and the streets around it. Opening hours change with the season and with services, and our guide times the visit to fit them.

Setenil de las Bodegas, the village under the rock

Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most unusual of Andalusia's white villages. Instead of building caves into the cliff, its people built their houses beneath the huge rock overhangs carved by the Trejo River, so whole streets have a ceiling of stone. The two best-known lanes, Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra, are named after the sunny and shaded sides of the gorge.

During a guided stop of about 45 minutes you walk these rock-roofed streets, see the remains of the Nasrid-era castle tower above the village, and enjoy the cool shade that the rock provides even in summer. If you have searched for a Setenil de las Bodegas tour from Seville, this route combines it neatly with Córdoba and Ronda on the same day.

Ronda and the Puente Nuevo

Ronda sits on a plateau split in two by the El Tajo gorge, about 100 metres deep, with the Guadalevín River running at the bottom. The Puente Nuevo, the "New Bridge" completed in 1793, joins the two halves of the town with stone piers that rise almost the full height of the gorge, creating one of the most photographed views in Spain.

Your guide spends about 1 hour 45 minutes in Ronda: crossing the Puente Nuevo, walking through the old Moorish town known as La Ciudad, and visiting the cliff-edge viewpoints over the countryside. Many travellers ask whether a Ronda day trip from Seville is worth it, and the views from the gardens beside the gorge at the end of the afternoon are the best answer.

The journey through Andalusia

The route itself is part of the experience. The first leg follows the Guadalquivir valley through olive groves and farmland to Córdoba, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Seville. The longer leg of about 2 hours crosses the rolling countryside towards the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda, with Setenil and Ronda only about 30 minutes apart.

Southern Spain can be very hot in summer, so the itinerary is designed with the heat in mind: regular stops to buy water, breaks in the shade and an air-conditioned vehicle between every stop. The return drive to Seville takes about 2 hours, so you arrive back in the evening after a long but rewarding day.
