Full Description
The Guadalquivir River in Seville
The Guadalquivir takes its name from the Arabic for "the great river", and it made Seville rich: for two centuries after 1503 the city held the monopoly on trade with the Americas, and fleets loaded with silver docked along these banks. Today the stretch through the city is a calm, sheltered arm of the river, closed off from the tidal flow, which is why rowers and paddlers train here all year round.
For a first-time paddler that calm water is the key: there is little current, the banks are lined with promenades and you are never far from a landing point. If you are looking for outdoor things to do in Seville or wondering how to see the city differently, a Guadalquivir kayak trip gives you the classic skyline from water level, without crowds or queues.
Torre del Oro, the golden tower
The Torre del Oro is the most famous landmark on the river. Built by the Almohads around 1220 as a military watchtower, its twelve-sided stone body once anchored a chain stretched across the Guadalquivir to protect the port. The name, "Tower of Gold", comes from the golden reflection of its mortar and tiles on the water, which you see best from a kayak in the late afternoon.
From the water you appreciate how the tower guarded the river entrance to the old city, with the cathedral and the Giralda rising behind it. The tower houses a small naval museum today, but the best photo of the Torre del Oro is the one you take from your own kayak, with its reflection rippling beside your paddle.
Triana and the Triana Bridge
On the west bank lies Triana, the historic quarter of sailors, potters and flamenco, whose colourful houses along Calle Betis face the river. Linking it to the centre is the Isabel II Bridge, known to everyone as the Triana Bridge, an elegant iron structure opened in 1852 and one of the oldest iron bridges still standing in Spain.
Paddling beneath its arches is one of the highlights of the route: you hear the city above you and see the bridge's iron rings from below. The sports facility where you start is close to the bridge, so you reach it within minutes and can return to it at the end of your two hours.
San Telmo Bridge and the riverside promenades
Further south, the San Telmo Bridge of 1931 joins the Puerta de Jerez to the Triana side and frames the view of the Torre del Oro. Along the way the banks are lined with palm trees, benches and walkways where locals jog, cycle and stroll, and you can watch daily life in Seville unfold from the water.
You choose the direction and the pace: head downstream to San Telmo, or explore the quieter stretches in the other direction. There is no guide on the water, so you can stop for photos as often as you like. Just keep an eye on the time, because kayaks must be returned punctually at the end of the two hours.
River wildlife and the best time to paddle
The Guadalquivir is surprisingly rich in wildlife for a city river. Turtles bask on logs and on the stone edges of the banks, ducks paddle alongside, and herons, egrets and gulls fly low over the water. Moving silently in a kayak lets you get close without disturbing them, so keep your phone or camera ready in a dry pocket and give the animals plenty of space.
The best time to kayak in Seville depends on the season. In summer the morning slots and the late-afternoon slots avoid the strongest heat, and the evening light turns the Torre del Oro golden. In spring and autumn any slot is pleasant. Bring sun protection whatever the season, because the water reflects the strong Andalusian sun.
