Full Description

Bangkok Elephant Park and the Drive East

Bangkok Elephant Park lies in Chachoengsao province, east of the capital, in a quiet countryside of rice fields, fish ponds and fruit orchards along the Bang Pakong River basin. It is the closest elephant care experience to central Bangkok, which makes it an easy elephant day trip from Bangkok without the long journeys needed to reach the parks of the north or Kanchanaburi.

Our shared air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your hotel in downtown Bangkok, with the exact pickup time confirmed the day before. The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way depending on traffic, so the whole outing lasts about 6 hours. Morning departures leave around 07:00 and return by about midday; afternoon departures leave around 11:00 and return in the late afternoon. If you have an evening flight, allow extra time for Bangkok traffic.

Arrival, Briefing and Elephant Behaviour

On arrival you are welcomed with a drink, change into the park uniform provided for the activities and leave your belongings safely. The team gives a clear safety briefing: how to approach an elephant, where to stand and how to read its mood. The park follows a no-riding, no-performance approach, so the time is spent watching and caring for the elephants rather than entertaining guests.

An English-speaking instructor then introduces the Asian elephant, Thailand's national animal and a symbol of the country for centuries. You learn about their family bonds, their intelligence, how they communicate with low rumbles and trunk touches, and the challenges captive elephants face today. Many travellers ask how to choose an ethical elephant sanctuary near Bangkok; this introduction explains what good care looks like in practice.

Preparing Food and Feeding the Elephants

Elephants spend most of their waking hours eating, and an adult can eat more than 100 kilograms of plants and fruit a day. Your first hands-on task is to help prepare their meal: cutting sugar cane, peeling bananas and mixing healthy snacks, depending on what is in season. The instructor explains which foods are good for elephants and why variety matters for their health.

Then comes the moment many guests have waited for: feeding the elephants by hand. You hold out the food and watch the trunk curl around it with surprising precision, or place it straight into an open mouth. It is a gentle, close encounter that children especially love, and the instructor stays nearby throughout. Bring your camera or phone in a waterproof pouch for photos at this stage.

Mud Spa and Elephant Bathing

In the wild, elephants roll and splash in mud to cool down and protect their skin from the sun and insects. At the park, you join them in a mud spa, scooping the soft mud and spreading it over their backs and sides while they relax. It is messy, fun and one of the most memorable parts of the day, so wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty and bring a change of clothes.

Afterwards the group moves to the water for bath time, helping to rinse the mud away with buckets and brushes and watching the elephants play and spray water with their trunks. This is the best chance to observe their natural behaviour up close. Sandals and waterproof boots can be rented or bought at the park Bring a change of clothes for afterwards.

Thai Herbal Inhaler Workshop and Buffet Lunch

Between elephant activities, you take part in a short workshop on the Thai herbal inhaler, known as ya dom, a small tube filled with menthol, camphor and aromatic herbs that Thais carry to refresh themselves in the heat or on long journeys. You mix the ingredients yourself and take your inhaler with you as a practical souvenir of the day.

The visit ends with a Thai buffet lunch, a relaxed meal after a morning or afternoon outdoors, with dishes that change with the season. Then our driver takes you back to your hotel in Bangkok. The best time to visit is the cool, dry season from November to February, but the park runs all year; in the hot months the mud and water activities are especially welcome.
