Full Description
The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)
The White Temple is the first reason most people book a Chiang Rai tour. Wat Rong Khun was designed by the Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, who began building it in 1997, and every surface is white plaster set with small pieces of mirror that flash in the sun. Crossing the bridge over the sea of outstretched hands is meant to represent leaving the cycle of rebirth behind, and the main hall inside is covered in modern, imaginative murals.
Our White Temple Chiang Rai tour reaches the site on the road south of the city, with time to explore the grounds, the gallery and the golden building. Wat Rong Khun opening hours can vary by season and a short midday break is common, so we plan the route around them. Many visitors ask whether the White Temple is worth visiting: almost everyone agrees it is the highlight of the day.
The Black House (Baan Dam Museum)
If the White Temple is all light, the Black House is its opposite. Baan Dam was the life's work of the Thai national artist Thawan Duchanee, and it is made up of dozens of dark timber buildings, some in the shape of northern Thai houses and temples, set in quiet gardens. Inside you will find carved furniture, animal skins, horns, bones and sculptures that show a very personal view of life and nature.
People who search for the Black House Chiang Rai often expect a single building, so it surprises them to find a whole campus to wander. Allow around an hour to cross the grounds. It is easy to see on a day tour because the site lies on the same northern road as the White Temple, which saves you working out how to get to the Black House on your own.
A Karen Hill-Tribe Village
The route continues to a Karen village in the hills, where families from the Kayan community, who originally came from across the border in Myanmar, live and sell their own handmade goods. Women here are known for wearing traditional brass neck coils, and visitors can watch weaving at a loom and see how scarves and textiles are made.
A Long Neck Karen Village visit is a cultural stop rather than a sightseeing one, so your guide will explain local customs and remind you to ask before taking close-up photographs. Buying a handmade item is a direct way to support the families. With the entrance-ticket option included, you do not need to arrange payment at the gate.
The House of Opium Museum
Near the banks of the Mekong, the House of Opium Museum explains the history of the poppy and opium trade that once shaped this border region. Displays include pipes, weights, tools and photographs of hill-tribe life, together with clear labels about how the trade grew and how Thailand later replaced it with other crops.
It is a small museum and a visit takes around half an hour, which makes it an easy and thoughtful stop before the Golden Triangle viewpoint. Your guide adds context about the region's recent past. Check which option you choose, because House of Opium Museum tickets are covered in the all-tickets option and paid on the spot in the other.
The Golden Triangle on the Mekong
The Golden Triangle is the meeting point of three countries: Thailand, Laos and Myanmar face each other where the Ruak River flows into the great Mekong. From the viewpoint at Sop Ruak you can look across the water at the other two shores and see a large golden Buddha and temples on the Thai bank. It is one of the most popular spots in northern Thailand for photographs.
Many travellers look for a Golden Triangle day trip from Chiang Rai because the border area is about an hour's drive from the city, which makes it hard to combine with other sights without a vehicle. On our tour the stop is included, and time is left for photographs and browsing nearby stalls before the drive back.
