Full Description
Doi Inthanon Summit, the Roof of Thailand
Doi Inthanon rises to 2,565 metres about 70 km southwest of Chiang Mai. It is the highest point in Thailand and the centre of a national park of cloud forest, rivers and waterfalls. The mountain is named after King Inthawichayanon, one of the last rulers of the Lanna kingdom of Chiang Mai, who wished his remains to rest on the peak; a small white stupa near the summit sign still honours him. Beside it, the short Ang Ka boardwalk enters a moss-draped forest of rhododendrons, ferns and lichens that feels closer to the Himalayas than to tropical Thailand.
At the top the air is often 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in the city, and on winter mornings it can fall close to freezing. Most visitors spend about half an hour here for photos at the summit sign and a stroll in the forest. Is Doi Inthanon worth visiting? For cool mountain air and real cloud forest so close to Chiang Mai, it is the classic answer.
The Twin Royal Pagodas and Their Gardens
High on the mountain road stand the two great chedis of Doi Inthanon, built by the Royal Thai Air Force to mark the sixtieth birthdays of the King and Queen of Thailand. The King's pagoda, Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon, is clad in bronze-brown tiles, while the Queen's, Phra Mahathat Naphaphonphumisiri, shines in soft lilac. Inside each are Buddha images, relics and murals, and the terraces around them are planted with seasonal flowers, ornamental beds and pools.
On a clear day the platforms look over ridge after ridge of forest, and in the cool season clouds often drift below you. Allow about 45 minutes to climb the steps, walk around both chedis and photograph the gardens. These are active Buddhist shrines, so cover shoulders and knees and leave flip-flops in the van; trainers or closed shoes are fine. The pagoda tickets are already included in the default option, so there is nothing to pay at the gate.
Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail with a Karen Guide
The Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail starts near the Karen village of Mae Klang Luang on the lower slopes of Doi Inthanon. Park rules ask every group to walk with a guide from the community, so a Karen guide joins our English-speaking guide and explains the plants, farming and daily life of the village. The path, roughly 3 km long, follows a forest stream over small bamboo bridges and past cascades to the Pha Dok Siew waterfall, then opens onto terraced rice fields and shaded coffee gardens.
The Pha Dok Siew trek takes about two hours at an easy pace, with some uneven, stepped and muddy sections, so shoes with good grip are essential. From July to September the terraces are bright green and the falls run strong; by November the paddies turn gold before harvest. The trail ends in the village, where you rest, see wooden houses on stilts and learn how Karen families grow and roast their own coffee.
White Karen Village and Hmong Hill-Tribe Market
Doi Inthanon is shared by two highland peoples. The Karen, often called White Karen in this area, farm the lower valleys in terraced rice fields and are known for their hand-woven tunics; this is a White Karen community, not a Long Neck village. Higher up, Hmong families settled around the mountain and turned to coffee, strawberries, cabbages and cut flowers through the royal highland projects that replaced opium farming in the north.
The Hmong hill-tribe market along the park road is the place to taste and buy their produce: roasted coffee beans, dried fruit, honey, herbal teas, embroidered bags and colourful textiles. Spend about 20 minutes browsing and bring small notes, as most stalls take cash only. Buying directly from these families is one of the simplest ways to support the communities whose land the national park protects, and the coffee makes a light souvenir to carry back.
Wachirathan Waterfall
Wachirathan Waterfall drops about 80 metres over a granite cliff on the Mae Klang River and is the most powerful cascade on the road up Doi Inthanon. A short path from the car park leads to a viewing platform where the spray sweeps across the rocks, and on sunny afternoons it often paints a rainbow in the mist. A line of stalls near the entrance sells grilled snacks, fresh fruit and highland coffee.
Swimming is not allowed here, so this is a stop for viewing and photos, about 30 minutes. The flow is strongest from August to November after the rains, when the spray can soak you on the platform; from March to May the falls are gentler and the rock face is easier to see. Keep a light rain jacket or a plastic bag for your phone and take care on the wet stone steps. It is the last sight of the day before the drive back to Chiang Mai.
