Full Description

Thong Sala and the crossing to Ang Thong

The day begins in Thong Sala, the main town and harbour on the west coast of Koh Phangan. Our driver collects you from your hotel and brings you to the tour office near the pier, where a light breakfast of tea, coffee and bread is served while the guide checks in the group and explains the day.

From the pier, the speedboat heads west past Koh Samui towards the marine park, a crossing of about an hour. As you approach, a maze of steep green islands appears on the horizon, their cliffs rising straight out of the sea. Many visitors ask how to get to Ang Thong from Koh Phangan; a speedboat day trip is the simplest way, because there is no public ferry and the park has almost no accommodation.

The Blue Lagoon on Koh Mae Ko

The most famous sight in the park is the Blue Lagoon, known in Thai as Thale Nai, on the island of Koh Mae Ko. It is a saltwater lake completely enclosed by limestone cliffs and connected to the open sea only through underground channels, so its water stays an unusual shade of emerald green that changes with the light and the tide.

From the beach, a steep path with stairs and handrails climbs through the forest to a viewing platform above the lagoon, a walk of about 10 to 15 minutes. Swimming in the lagoon is not allowed, to protect its fragile ecosystem, but the view from the top is unforgettable. Is Ang Thong Marine Park worth visiting? This lagoon alone answers the question for most travellers.

The Ang Thong viewpoint

On Koh Wua Talab, the island where the park headquarters stands, a steep trail leads up to the Ang Thong viewpoint, one of the most photographed panoramas in Thailand. The path is about 500 metres long but climbs sharply over rocks and roots, with ropes and ladders in places, and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the top.

The reward is a sweeping view over the whole archipelago: jagged limestone islands scattered across a turquoise sea, white beaches and dense jungle all around. The name Ang Thong means 'golden bowl', and from up here you can see why. Wear proper shoes with good grip, bring water and take your time on the way down. Guests who prefer not to hike can relax on the beach below.

Sea kayaking and snorkelling

Kayaking is the best way to explore the hidden corners of Ang Thong. In stable two-person sea kayaks, you paddle along the cliffs, past small caves and arches and into quiet coves where the water is crystal clear. Your guide leads the group and chooses a sheltered route according to the wind; children can join from the age of 5.

The tour also includes a snorkelling stop on one of the park's reefs, where you can see corals, parrotfish, butterflyfish and other tropical species. Snorkel masks and life jackets are provided. Lunch is a beachside buffet with fruit and vegetarian options, with time afterwards to swim and rest. The best time to visit Ang Thong is from February to October; in November and December the north-east monsoon can bring rough seas and occasional park closures.
