Full Description
Thong Sala and the crossing to Koh Tao
The day begins in Thong Sala, the main harbour town of Koh Phangan. Our driver brings you from your hotel to the tour office near the pier, where tea, coffee and bread are served while the guide checks in the group. The speedboat then heads north across open water to Koh Tao, a crossing of about an hour.
Many travellers wonder how to get to Koh Tao from Koh Phangan for a single day. Regular ferries link the islands, but a speedboat tour is the easiest way to combine Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan with snorkelling stops and lunch, without planning connections. On calm mornings, flying fish skim the surface beside the boat, and the hills of Koh Tao soon appear ahead, scattered with huge granite boulders.
Koh Tao: the island of clear water
Koh Tao, whose name means 'turtle island', is a small, rugged island famous worldwide as one of the best places to learn to dive. Its coastline is a series of quiet coves framed by smooth granite rocks and coconut palms, where the water is calm, warm and remarkably clear for much of the year.
The speedboat stops at some of the island's best snorkelling bays, chosen by the crew according to the wind and currents of the day. Here you can see hard corals, giant clams, parrotfish, angelfish, and sometimes reef sharks or turtles near the bottom. A Koh Tao snorkelling trip suits beginners and families, because many spots are shallow and protected. Snorkel masks and life jackets are provided, and your guide stays close to the group.
Koh Nang Yuan and its sandbar
Just off the north-west coast of Koh Tao lies Koh Nang Yuan, one of the most photographed places in Thailand. Three small islands are joined by a narrow sandbar of white coral sand, with clear turquoise water on both sides. At low tide the sandbar is wide and you can walk from island to island; at high tide the waves almost meet over it.
You have time to swim from the beach, snorkel in the coral garden beside the pier and rest in the shade. The island is privately managed and protected: a small entry fee is paid in cash on arrival, and plastic bottles are not allowed on the island to keep it clean. Is Koh Nang Yuan worth visiting? For its scenery alone, it is one of the highlights of any trip to these islands.
The Koh Nang Yuan viewpoint and lunch
From the sandbar, a path with wooden steps and rocks climbs to the Koh Nang Yuan viewpoint, a climb of about 15 to 20 minutes. From the top, the view takes in the whole sandbar curving between the islands, the turquoise shallows and the green hills of Koh Tao behind. It is the classic postcard image of the area, best photographed in the morning light.
Lunch is a beachside buffet with fruit and vegetarian options, with time afterwards to swim and relax before the speedboat returns to Koh Phangan in the afternoon. The best time to visit Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan is from February to October, when the sea is usually calm and visibility is good; November and December bring the north-east monsoon and rougher crossings.
