Full Description

Dolmabahçe Palace and its history

Dolmabahçe Palace was built between 1843 and 1856 on the European shore of the Bosphorus, on land reclaimed from a small bay, which is what its name means: filled garden. The sultans left the medieval courtyards of Topkapi for this European-style residence with 285 rooms, 46 halls and a 600-metre marble facade on the water, and it remained the administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire until 1922. Fourteen tonnes of gold leaf were used on the ceilings.

After the Republic the palace became the Istanbul residence of its founder, who died here on 10 November 1938; all the clocks in the palace are stopped at 9:05, the moment of his death. Today it is a museum of the late Ottoman world: French furniture, Hereke carpets, Bohemian and Baccarat crystal and the largest collection of chandeliers of its kind. Dolmabahçe Palace tickets cover the Selamlık, the state apartments, and the Harem, and both are included here.

The Selamlık: Crystal Staircase and the Ceremonial Hall

The visit begins in the Selamlık, the public and ceremonial side of the palace, where your audio guide leads you from the entrance hall to the Crystal Staircase, a double horseshoe staircase with balusters of Baccarat crystal under a glass dome. Around it open the reception rooms for ambassadors and ministers, each more gilded than the last, with painted ceilings, huge mirrors and porcelain stoves, and windows looking straight onto the Bosphorus.

The climax is the Ceremonial Hall, a domed space 36 metres high used for the sultan's receptions, where a crystal chandelier of four and a half tonnes with 750 lamps hangs from the dome; it is one of the largest in the world and the photograph everyone takes. Allow about an hour for the Selamlık with the audio guide; the route is one-way, so listen to each stop as you reach it.

The Harem

A separate wing, reached through the gardens, housed the private apartments of the sultan and his family, and the Harem ticket included here gives access to it. The rooms are smaller and more intimate than the state halls: the apartments of the Queen Mother, the sultan's bedroom and bathroom lined with Egyptian alabaster, the blue and pink salons, schoolrooms for the princes and the quarters of the palace women, furnished as they were in the last decades of the empire.

The most visited room in the Harem is the modest bedroom where the founder of the Republic spent his final days, kept exactly as it was with the flag over the bed and the clock on the table showing 9:05. The audio guide explains each room in your language; count about 45 minutes here, and note that the Harem usually closes a little earlier than the main palace in winter.

Practical visit: Beşiktaş, opening hours and the audio guide

How to get to Dolmabahçe Palace is easy: it stands on Dolmabahçe Avenue in Beşiktaş, five minutes on foot from the Kabataş stop of the T1 tram from Sultanahmet and from the funicular down from Taksim, and the Beşiktaş ferry pier from Üsküdar and Kadıköy is a ten-minute walk. The entrance is beside the palace clock tower. Dolmabahçe Palace opening hours run from 09:00; the ticket desks close at about 16:00 in winter and later in summer, and the palace is closed on Mondays.

Your QR tickets and the audio guide link arrive by email for the chosen day; download the guide beforehand, because there is no Wi-Fi inside, and bring earphones. Everyone passes a security check at the gate, which can mean a short wait at busy hours, and bags are scanned. Photography without flash is allowed in most rooms. Our Istanbul team suggests the first entry slot at 10:00 for the quietest visit.
