Full Description

The lounge: what two hours before boarding look like

Istanbul Airport's departures halls are vast, and the public seating near the gates fills up fast at the morning and evening peaks. The airport-operated lounge is the quiet alternative: armchairs and sofas in separate zones, tables where you can open a laptop, flight information screens that show your gate and boarding time, television, newspapers and magazines, and high-speed Wi-Fi that works, which is not always true of the free network in the terminal.

The buffet is the main attraction. At mealtimes there are hot and cold dishes, soups, salads and pastries; between meals there are snacks and bowls of fresh fruit, and soft drinks, juices, water, tea and coffee are served without limit, all of it halal as everywhere in Turkey. Massage chairs stand in a corner for tired travellers. Two hours is the length of the pass, counted from the moment you check in at the lounge reception, which is exactly the window most passengers have between security and boarding.

International or domestic departures lounge

The pass is sold for two lounges in the same terminal, and you book the one that matches your flight. The international departures lounge, the default, is airside beyond passport control and serves flights abroad; it is the larger of the two and has shower rooms, computer workstations and a conference room, which makes it the better choice for business travellers and for anyone arriving from an overnight flight who wants to freshen up before a connection.

The domestic departures lounge serves flights within Turkey, to Antalya, İzmir, Trabzon, Cappadocia or Bodrum, and is reached after the domestic security check. It has the same buffet and Wi-Fi, adds vegetarian dishes and offers a buggy ride from the lounge to your gate, useful in a terminal where some domestic gates are a long walk away. If you are unsure which to book, send our team your flight number and we will tell you.

The practical side: check-in, security and the two-hour rule

The lounge is inside the restricted area, so you must already hold a boarding pass for a departing flight: check in with your airline, drop your bags and pass security (and passport control for international flights) first. There is no reservation; you walk to the lounge and present your boarding pass with our voucher at the reception. Access is permitted only within two hours of your boarding time, and each visit lasts two hours, so arriving earlier does not extend the stay.

If the lounge is temporarily at capacity you may wait for a seat to free up, or contact us and we cancel and refund the pass. Children under three enter free, and the lounge is wheelchair accessible. Our Istanbul team's advice for international flights is to arrive at the airport three hours before departure, clear security within the first hour, and spend the remaining two in the lounge.

Istanbul Airport and how to get there

Istanbul Airport opened in 2018 in Arnavutköy on the European side, about 40 kilometres north-west of Sultanahmet, and handles most international flights to the city; Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side is the second airport. How to get to Istanbul Airport: the M11 metro runs from Gayrettepe and Kağıthane in about 35 minutes; airport shuttle buses leave around the clock from Taksim, Sultanahmet, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy and other districts in 60 to 90 minutes; and a taxi from the old city takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.

Allow more time in the evening rush and on Friday afternoons. Inside, the terminal is one huge building: check-in on the departures level, then security and passport control, then a long walk through the shops to the gates, with the lounges signposted on the way. From passport control to the lounge door is usually five to ten minutes on foot.
