Full Description

Topkapi Palace, four centuries of Ottoman rule

Topkapi Palace was begun by Sultan Mehmet II in the 1460s, a few years after the conquest, on the headland where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. For almost four hundred years it was the residence of the sultans and the seat of government, until the court moved to Dolmabahçe in 1856. Rather than one great building, it is a city of courtyards, gates, kiosks and gardens inside a long wall, and it became a museum in 1924.

The palace is the largest of Sultanahmet's monuments and the one where visitors most often run out of time, which is why our Istanbul team suggests arriving early with a fast-track Topkapi Palace ticket. Plan at least two to three hours, more if you want to see every room of the Treasury and the Sacred Relics, and wear comfortable shoes, because the courtyards are long and paved with stone.

The courtyards, the Council hall and the kitchens

You enter through the Imperial Gate into the first courtyard, a park with plane trees and the Byzantine church of Hagia Eirene on the left, then meet the security check and the Gate of Salutation with its two pointed towers, which only the sultan could pass on horseback. The second courtyard is the heart of government: on the left the Imperial Council hall, where the viziers met beneath a gilded dome while the sultan listened through a grilled window, and the Tower of Justice above it.

On the right of the second courtyard are the palace kitchens, a row of domed halls with tall chimneys that once fed thousands daily and now display one of the world's great collections of Chinese and Japanese porcelain, along with the copper pots of the imperial kitchen. The audio guide app takes you building by building, and the Harem entrance, with its separate ticket, stands at the corner of this courtyard.

The Treasury, the Sacred Relics and the third courtyard

The Gate of Felicity leads into the third courtyard, the sultan's private world. Straight ahead is the Audience Chamber where ambassadors were received; around the courtyard are the library, the costume rooms and, in the far right corner, the Imperial Treasury with the Spoonmaker's Diamond, the emerald-set dagger, thrones and jewelled armour that draw the longest queues in the palace, so visit these rooms first if the courtyard is busy.

Opposite, in the Privy Chamber, are the Sacred Relics: the mantle and standard of the Prophet, swords of the early caliphs and other objects brought from Mecca, Medina and Cairo after the Ottomans took the caliphate in 1517, displayed to the sound of continuous Quran recitation. Many Muslim visitors consider this the most meaningful room in Istanbul; dress modestly and keep voices low.

The fourth courtyard: pavilions, tulip gardens and the view

The fourth courtyard is the garden where the sultans relaxed. Terraces step down towards the water with the Revan and Baghdad kiosks, tiled pavilions of the 1630s built to celebrate campaigns in the east, the gilded bronze canopy of the Iftar Kiosk where the sultan broke his Ramadan fast, and the Circumcision Room covered in blue İznik tiles. Below lie the former tulip gardens and the Terrace Kiosk.

From the marble balustrade the view sweeps over the Golden Horn, Galata and the Bosphorus towards the Asian shore, the best free panorama in the old city and the reason to save this courtyard for last. There is a café on the lower terrace for tea with the same view. Allow half an hour here before walking back through the courtyards to the gate.

Your visit: the host, the entry slots and what to know

Meet your host near the Imperial Gate, the main gate of Topkapi Palace behind Hagia Sophia at the top of Sultanahmet, fifteen minutes before your chosen slot; we send the exact spot with your confirmation. The host takes you through the entrance with your fast-track ticket and leaves you to explore. This is not a guided tour: the explanations come from the audio guide app, which you download before arriving and which works offline once installed.

Even with fast-track entry there is a security check at the Gate of Salutation that can take up to thirty minutes in high season, so the earliest slots are the calmest. The palace is closed on Tuesdays. Children aged six and under enter free when you show their passport at the entrance, otherwise a standard ticket is needed. Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern and Gülhane Park are all within a few minutes' walk for the rest of your day.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

It is an individual fast-track ticket: the host meets a small group of ticket holders at the gate and takes you in, then you visit independently with the audio guide app.

How long does the visit take?

The ticket is valid all day; most visitors spend two to three hours, and more if they see every room of the Treasury and the Sacred Relics.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The meeting point is near the Imperial Gate behind Hagia Sophia, five minutes from the Sultanahmet and Gülhane tram stops.

What is included?

Fast-track entry to Topkapi Palace, the English-speaking host at the gate and the multilingual audio guide app; the Harem and a live guide are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person; the booking panel on this page shows the current price.

Is the Harem included in the ticket?

No. The Harem needs a separate ticket bought at the palace; everything else in the four courtyards, including the Treasury and the Sacred Relics, is included.

What are the Topkapi Palace opening hours and closed day?

Entry slots with this ticket run from 09:30 to 16:00 and the palace is closed every Tuesday; once inside you can stay until closing.

Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?

Children aged six and under enter free with a passport. The courtyards are flat but long, with steps into some pavilions, so it is tiring for wheelchair users; tell us and we advise.

What should I bring?

A charged phone with the app downloaded, headphones, your passport if you have children, comfortable shoes and modest clothing for the relics rooms.

When is the best time to visit Topkapi Palace?

The first slots of the morning, before the tour groups, or a 15:00 or 16:00 slot when the crowds thin; spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons in the gardens.

What happens if I miss my entry slot?

Tell our team on WhatsApp; the slots run every fifteen minutes until 14:00 and again at 15:00 and 16:00, and we help you join the next available one.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date and slot on this page; our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the meeting spot and app download link.
