Full Description
Sultanahmet Square and the Hippodrome
Your tour begins in Sultanahmet Square, the heart of the old city and the site of the Byzantine Hippodrome where chariot races once drew tens of thousands of spectators. Your guide walks you past the three monuments still standing on the former racing track: the Obelisk of Theodosius, carved in Egypt around 1500 BC and raised here in 390 AD on a marble base showing the emperor and his court; the bronze Serpent Column brought from the sanctuary at Delphi; and the Walled Obelisk at the far end. The German Fountain, a domed pavilion with golden mosaics, marks the northern end of the square.
Twenty minutes here gives you the orientation that makes the rest of the Sultanahmet walking tour make sense: the mosque on one side, Hagia Sophia on the other, and the layout of the Byzantine palace quarter under your feet. Our Istanbul team recommends the morning start, when the square is quiet and the light is soft for photos before the groups arrive.
The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)
The Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1616 for Sultan Ahmed I by the architect Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa, a pupil of Sinan, and it is the only imperial mosque in Istanbul with six minarets. The name comes from the interior, where more than twenty thousand hand-painted İznik tiles climb the walls and galleries and more than two hundred stained-glass windows light the prayer hall under a dome carried on four huge fluted piers. Your guide takes you in through the visitor entrance after the arcaded courtyard.
The mosque is a working place of worship, closed to visitors during the five daily prayers and on Friday until the early afternoon, so the Blue Mosque tour is timed around those windows. Women cover their hair, everyone covers shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at the door. Allow about eighty minutes for the courtyard, the interior and your guide's explanations of the calligraphy, the mihrab and the sultan's loge.
Hagia Sophia with pre-reserved tickets
Hagia Sophia is the monument that defines Istanbul: built in just five years and completed in 537 under Emperor Justinian, it was the largest cathedral in the world for almost a thousand years, became an imperial mosque after the Ottoman conquest of 1453, served as a museum from 1934, and has been a mosque again since 2020. Since 2024, foreign visitors enter through a dedicated entrance with a ticket and explore the upper galleries, while the ground floor is reserved for prayer. Your Hagia Sophia tickets are pre-reserved, so you walk to the separate visitor entrance with your guide, pass security and go straight up the ramp.
From the galleries you look down on the great dome, thirty-one metres across and fifty-five metres above the floor, and across to the giant calligraphic roundels and the golden mosaics of the apse. Your guide explains how Byzantine mosaics and Ottoman additions share one building, and leaves you with time to photograph the view from the gallery arches.
The upper gallery and the mosaics
The upper gallery is where Hagia Sophia's best-preserved art survives, and it is exactly where the visitor route takes you. The Deesis mosaic from the thirteenth century, showing a central figure between two others with extraordinary subtlety, is the highlight; nearby are the imperial panels of emperors and empresses offering gifts to the church, and the marble door that once separated the area used for church councils. Carved into the balustrades are centuries of visitors' graffiti, including runes left by a Viking guard.
Because entry is through the ticketed gallery route, the guided tour gives you a clear line of sight to the dome and the apse without the crowds of the ground floor. Is Hagia Sophia worth visiting with a guide? In our experience the building only speaks when someone explains its layers, and that is why this tour pairs both monuments with one licensed guide rather than an audio app.
Galataport to the old town for cruise passengers
If your ship docks at Galataport in Karaköy, choose the Galataport option: your guide meets you at the passenger exit of the cruise terminal at 10:30 and takes you across the Galata Bridge by tram rather than sitting in coach traffic. The T1 tram runs along the Golden Horn past Eminönü and Sirkeci and reaches Sultanahmet in about fifteen minutes, which is the way our Istanbul team itself travels between the two sides of the city.
The route on foot and tram is also part of the experience: you see the Galata waterfront, the ferries at Eminönü and the walls of Gülhane Park before arriving at the Hippodrome. The tour then follows the same programme as the Sultanahmet start, about three hours in total, and ends in Sultanahmet Square, from where the tram takes you back to Karaköy in a few stops. The return tram ticket is at your own expense.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
The default option is a shared small-group tour with an English-speaking licensed guide. A private version for your own party only and a larger-group version of up to 24 people are also available on this page.
How long does the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia tour take?
About two and a half hours from the Sultanahmet meeting point. The Galataport option takes about three hours because it includes the tram ride from the cruise terminal to the old town.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You meet the guide in Sultanahmet old town, which is easy to reach on the T1 tram from Eminönü, Karaköy or Kabataş. Cruise passengers can choose the Galataport meeting option instead.
What is included?
A licensed guide, headsets, the guided visits of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, the walk across the Hippodrome and your pre-reserved Hagia Sophia visitor ticket. Blue Mosque entry is free. Food, drinks and gratuities are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
The shared options are priced per person, with a child rate for ages 7 to 14. The private option is priced per group by the number of travellers. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Do I need to buy Hagia Sophia tickets separately?
No, your Hagia Sophia visitor ticket is pre-reserved and included; you enter through the separate ticketed entrance with your guide rather than queuing at the ticket office.
Which parts of Hagia Sophia do visitors see?
Foreign visitors use the upper galleries, which give the classic view of the dome, the calligraphic roundels and the surviving Byzantine mosaics. The ground floor is reserved for prayer.
What is the dress code?
Both monuments are mosques: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and a headscarf for women. Shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops are not allowed. Bring a scarf and wear shoes that are easy to take off.
Is the tour suitable for children or for reduced mobility?
Children from 7 years are welcome at a child rate; the tour is not suitable for younger children, strollers or wheelchair users because of stairs, security checks and the long ramp to the Hagia Sophia gallery.
What is the best time to do this tour?
The 09:00 departure is quieter and cooler, with softer light in the square. Avoid Friday midday if you can, since the Blue Mosque is closed to visitors until the early afternoon and Hagia Sophia pauses for Friday prayer.
What happens if the Blue Mosque is closed for prayer when we arrive?
Your guide knows the prayer times and reorders the visits, usually starting with Hagia Sophia or the Hippodrome, so you still see both interiors.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option and date, send the booking, and our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes with the meeting point pin and your guide's details.
