Overview
This is a small-group walking tour of the two monuments that face each other across Sultanahmet Square: the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, with the ancient Hippodrome in between. A licensed guide meets you at the German Fountain, leads you through the courtyard and prayer hall of the Blue Mosque, explains the obelisks of the Hippodrome and then takes you into Hagia Sophia with a priority admission ticket already in hand, so you skip the ticket queue. The visit lasts about 2.5 hours and ends in Sultanahmet Square. It suits first-time visitors, families with children who walk comfortably, and anyone who wants the stories behind the domes, not a quick photo stop. The default departure is a shared small group; a private version with your own guide is also available.

Full Description
The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)
The Blue Mosque was built between 1609 and 1617 for Sultan Ahmed I, right beside the Hippodrome, and it is still the most recognisable silhouette in Istanbul: a cascade of domes and half-domes and six slender minarets. The name comes from the inside, where more than twenty thousand hand-painted Iznik tiles in blue, turquoise and white cover the lower walls and galleries, and more than two hundred stained-glass windows light the prayer hall. Your guide explains the tilework, the calligraphy and how the building was designed to compete with Hagia Sophia opposite.
A Blue Mosque tour works best outside prayer times, so our guides time the visit around the five daily prayers; on Fridays the mosque opens to visitors after the midday prayer. Entry is free, shoes come off at the door, shoulders and knees must be covered and women cover their hair. Allow about 30 to 40 minutes inside, including the arcaded courtyard.
The Hippodrome of Constantinople
Between the two monuments lies the Hippodrome, the chariot-racing arena of Byzantine Constantinople, where up to a hundred thousand spectators once gathered and where politics, sport and riots played out for centuries. Today it is a long garden square, but three monuments still stand on its central spine: the Obelisk of Theodosius, an Egyptian obelisk of pink granite carved around 1450 BC and raised here in 390 AD on a carved marble base; the bronze Serpent Column, brought from the sanctuary of Delphi; and the Walled Obelisk, once sheathed in gilded bronze.
At the northern end stands the German Fountain, a domed neo-Byzantine pavilion with gold mosaics inside, given to the city in 1900 and the meeting point of this tour. The walk across the Hippodrome takes about 15 minutes and is where your guide sets the scene: how Constantinople was built, how it fell in 1453 and why the square is still the heart of Istanbul's old city.
Hagia Sophia with priority admission
Hagia Sophia was completed in 537 as the cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, became an imperial mosque after the Ottoman conquest of 1453, served as a museum from 1934 and has been a working mosque again since 2020. Its dome, about 31 metres across and some 55 metres above the floor, was the largest in the world for almost a thousand years. Since 2024 visitors enter through a dedicated gate and follow a route through the upper gallery, which is where the best-known mosaics are: the Deesis, the imperial portraits and the view down into the nave with its eight huge calligraphy roundels.
Your Hagia Sophia skip-the-line ticket is pre-arranged, so you go straight to the security check with your guide and avoid the ticket queue; security itself cannot be skipped and can take longer on religious holidays. Inside, the guide covers the Byzantine mosaics, the Ottoman additions such as the mihrab, minbar and minarets, and the tombs of several sultans in the garden. Allow about an hour.
Sultanahmet Square and the end of the tour
The tour finishes in Sultanahmet Square, the park between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque with its fountain and flower beds, which is also the best spot for a photograph with both monuments in one frame. From here the Sultanahmet stop of the T1 tram is two minutes away, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern are within five minutes on foot, and the Grand Bazaar is a 15-minute walk along Divan Yolu, the old Byzantine main road.
Our Istanbul team recommends keeping the afternoon free after the tour: the cistern and Topkapi Palace are not included but your guide will tell you how to get to each, the queues to expect and where to have a halal lunch nearby. If you prefer, we can also arrange tickets for those sites with your booking so the whole day in Sultanahmet is planned.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
The default option is a shared small-group tour with a licensed guide. A private option with your own guide, flexible pace and more start times is available on the booking panel.
How long does the tour take?
About 2.5 hours for the shared tour and about 3 hours for the private tour, ending in Sultanahmet Square.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You meet the guide at the German Fountain in Sultanahmet, two minutes from the Sultanahmet tram stop. We send a map pin with your confirmation.
What is included?
A licensed guide, the priority admission ticket to Hagia Sophia and the guided visit of the Blue Mosque, which is free to enter. Food, drinks and tips are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
The shared tour is priced per person; the private tour is priced per group by size. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Do we skip the queue at Hagia Sophia?
You skip the ticket queue because the ticket is pre-arranged. Everyone must pass the security check, which can take longer during religious holidays.
Which part of Hagia Sophia do visitors see?
Visitors follow the route through the upper gallery, where the main mosaics are, with views down into the nave. The ground floor is reserved for worship.
What should I wear?
Clothing that covers shoulders and knees for everyone, and a headscarf for women. Shoes are removed inside the mosques, so slip-on shoes and socks are practical.
Is it suitable for children or for reduced mobility?
Children are welcome, though those under 5 may find the walking tiring. The route has cobbles and stairs, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or people with mobility impairments.
What is the best time of day to go?
The first morning departure is the calmest at Hagia Sophia. On Fridays the Blue Mosque opens to visitors after the midday prayer, so the guide visits Hagia Sophia first.
Can we visit the Blue Mosque during prayer time?
No, the mosque closes to visitors for about 90 minutes around each prayer. The guide knows the daily times and reorders the stops so you still see both monuments.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date, option and number of travellers on this page. Our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the meeting point map and your guide's details.
