Full Description

The Bosphorus from the water

The Bosphorus is the strait that joins the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and divides Istanbul into its European and Asian halves, about 30 kilometres long and in places less than a kilometre wide. Every empire that held the city built along it, and a Bosphorus sunset cruise is still the easiest way to see the best of that shoreline in one go: Ottoman palaces, summer residences of pashas, fishing villages turned fashionable districts, and the two great suspension bridges. The yacht keeps close to the shore, so the view changes every few minutes.

The best time for a Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul is the late-afternoon departure, when the light turns gold on the palaces, the lamps come on in Ortaköy and the sky over the Old City goes orange as you return. Sunset falls around 17:30 in winter and after 20:00 in June, which is why the 16:30 departure is the one our Istanbul team recommends for most of the year.

Dolmabahçe Palace and Ortaköy

Leaving the pier, the yacht passes Dolmabahçe Palace, the 600-metre marble façade that replaced Topkapi as the sultans' residence in 1856. Its ornate gates open straight onto the water, which is how the court arrived by boat, and from the deck you see the clock tower, the ceremonial hall and the mosque at the palace's southern end. A little further along the European shore stands Çırağan Palace, an 1860s palace with a long waterfront colonnade.

The next landmark is Ortaköy, a former fishing village whose small baroque mosque sits right on the quay beneath the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the first bridge across the Bosphorus, opened in 1973 and more than 1.5 kilometres long. Mosque and bridge in one frame is the classic photograph of this cruise, and the guide slows the commentary here so everyone can take it. The square behind the mosque is lively in the evening with its kumpir stands and cafés.

Rumeli Fortress and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge

North of the first bridge the shore is lined with yalı, the wooden waterfront mansions built from the eighteenth century onward as summer houses, painted in ochre, white and rust red and standing with their feet in the water. The yacht turns near Rumeli Fortress, the castle built on the narrowest point of the strait in 1452, in just a few months, to control shipping before the conquest of Constantinople; its three great towers and walls climb the hillside above the water.

Opposite it on the Asian shore stands the smaller Anadolu Fortress from the 1390s, and overhead the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, opened in 1988, links the two sides at the spot where the strait is only about 700 metres wide. From the deck you look through the bridge towards the Black Sea end of the Bosphorus; this is the turning point of the 2-hour route.

The Asian shore and Beylerbeyi

On the way back the yacht follows the Asian side, passing Kandilli and Çengelköy and then Beylerbeyi Palace, the white summer palace completed in 1865 for receiving foreign royalty, with its marble bathing pavilions at the water's edge right beside the first bridge. The gardens of Kuzguncuk and the mosques of Üsküdar follow, and the European shore across the water, now lit up, gives the second half of the cruise a completely different feel from the first.

This stretch is where the guide usually has the most stories, from the villages that supplied the palaces with fruit to the ferries that still carry commuters between the continents. Tea and coffee are served throughout, and the indoor lounge is warm if the evening breeze on deck gets cool; our team suggests a light jacket from October to April.

Maiden's Tower and the Old City skyline

The last landmark is Maiden's Tower, the small white lighthouse tower on an islet 200 metres off Üsküdar, rebuilt in its present form in the eighteenth century and restored in 2023. Legends surround it, and seen at dusk with its lamp lit against the silhouette of Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque across the water, it is the view that ends every good Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul.

The yacht then crosses back to the European shore and returns to the pier about two hours after departure. The pier is on the European side within reach of the T1 tram and the Bosphorus ferries from Üsküdar and Kadıköy; the exact pier and a map pin come with your confirmation, so getting there and getting back to your hotel is straightforward. Halal snacks are served on board, and you may bring your own soft drinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private cruise?

The default option is a shared cruise for up to 40 guests. A private yacht for your group for 2 hours, and a private full-day swimming cruise in summer, are available on the booking panel.

How long does the cruise take?

About 2 hours (125 minutes) from boarding to return at the same pier.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You board at the pier on the European shore, which we name in your confirmation with directions by tram or ferry.

What is included?

The yacht cruise, an English-speaking guide, light snacks, cookies, a fresh seasonal fruit platter, tea and coffee.

Is the price per person or per group?

The shared cruise is per person; the private yachts are per boat. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Which departure is best for sunset?

The 16:30 departure from autumn to spring. In high summer the sun sets after 20:00, so the 16:30 cruise gives golden-hour light rather than the sunset itself; the private yacht can sail at any hour.

What do we see?

Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, both Bosphorus bridges, the yalı mansions, Rumeli Fortress, Beylerbeyi Palace and Maiden's Tower, with the Old City skyline on the way back.

Is it suitable for children or for reduced mobility?

Children of all ages are welcome. Non-folding and electric wheelchairs cannot be taken on board, so the cruise does not suit wheelchair users.

What happens in bad weather?

The yacht sails in light rain, with the heated indoor lounge available. If the harbour authority closes the Bosphorus to small boats because of wind, we move you to another departure or refund you.

Can we bring our own food or drinks?

Soft drinks are welcome on board. Snacks, fruit, tea and coffee are already provided.

Can we swim from the yacht?

Not on the sunset cruise. The private full-day option in summer includes swimming stops in sheltered coves of the Bosphorus.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose the departure, date and number of guests on this page. Our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the pier location and map.
