Overview
This is the simple, flexible way to see the Bosphorus: a 90-minute sightseeing cruise with a departure every hour from 10:00 to 18:00, booked with a QR ticket that skips the ticket line. You pick the hour that fits your day; the 16:00 and 17:00 sailings catch the sunset over the strait at no extra cost. The boat passes the Galata Tower skyline, Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy and the Bosphorus Bridge, crosses to the Asian shore and returns past the Maiden's Tower. The default option is the plain cruise; a second option adds a multilingual audio guide app (Arabic included) for your own phone, and a third departs from the Sultanahmet side with a live guide and also covers the Golden Horn. It suits anyone short on time.

Full Description
The Golden Horn entrance and the Galata Tower skyline
The cruise begins on the European shore, and the first thing you see as the boat pulls away is the view that has defined Istanbul for centuries: the Galata Tower, the 14th-century Genoese watchtower, standing above the rooftops of Karaköy and Beyoğlu, with the Galata Bridge and the mouth of the Golden Horn below it. On the other side, the domes and minarets of the Old City, with Topkapi Palace on its point, make up the skyline behind you as the boat heads up the strait.
Your QR ticket and boarding instructions arrive by email the day before (immediately for same-day bookings) with the name of the pier, so there is no ticket line. Arrive 20 minutes early, especially for the 16:00 and 17:00 sunset sailings, which fill first, and head for the upper deck if you want the best photos.
Dolmabahçe Palace, Beşiktaş and Ortaköy
The European shore unrolls on your left: the stadium and ferry piers of Beşiktaş, then the long white marble facade of Dolmabahçe Palace, the 19th-century residence of the last sultans, with its clock tower and ornate waterside gate. The audio guide option tells the story here, from the palace's crystal staircase to the republic's first president, who died in one of its rooms. Further on comes Çırağan Palace, and then the little square of Ortaköy with its baroque mosque sitting right on the water.
The Ortaköy Mosque with the Bosphorus Bridge rising behind it is the most photographed view of the strait; on the sunset sailings the sun drops behind the European hills at exactly this stage of the route, which is why so many visitors choose the 16:00 or 17:00 hour.
Under the Bosphorus Bridge to the Asian shore
The boat sails under the Bosphorus Bridge, the first suspension bridge between Europe and Asia, opened in 1973 and now officially called the 15 July Martyrs Bridge. Its deck hangs some 64 metres above the water, and passing beneath it with the roadway humming overhead is the moment children remember. On the far side the boat swings across to the Asian shore and turns south past Beylerbeyi Palace, the white summer palace of the 1860s that stands at the foot of the bridge, and the wooden waterside mansions of Çengelköy and Kuzguncuk.
This is the quieter, greener side of the Bosphorus, with old ferry piers, fishermen on the quays and the hills of Çamlıca behind. The short 90-minute route does not go as far as the second bridge or Rumeli Fortress; for those you would need a longer cruise.
Üsküdar, the Maiden's Tower and the return
Coming back down the Asian shore the boat passes Üsküdar, with its 16th-century mosques by the architect Sinan along the waterfront, and then the Maiden's Tower on its tiny islet just offshore. A tower has stood here since Byzantine times as a customs post and lighthouse; the present building dates from the 18th century and reopened after restoration in 2023. Framed against the Old City skyline, it is the classic closing photograph of a Bosphorus boat tour.
The boat then crosses back to the European shore and docks about 90 minutes after departure. From the pier you are a short walk or tram ride from Karaköy, Eminönü and Sultanahmet, so a morning cruise fits neatly before an afternoon in the Old City, and the 18:00 cruise ends in time for dinner.
The Sultanahmet departure and the Golden Horn option
The third option is a different boat and route for those staying in the Old City: it leaves from the Sultanahmet side at 12:00, 15:30 or 18:00 with a live guide on board and an audio guide app in seven languages, and it covers the Golden Horn as well as the lower Bosphorus. The Golden Horn is the inlet that separates the Old City from Galata; from the water you see the Galata Bridge with its fishermen, the Süleymaniye Mosque crowning the hill, the old quarters of Fener and Balat and the Eyüp Sultan Mosque at the far end.
It is a good choice if you want commentary from a person rather than an app, or if the Galata and Golden Horn views matter more to you than the Asian shore. The route then continues to the Bosphorus for the Dolmabahçe and bridge views before returning.
