Full Description
Sultanahmet Square and the walk to the Imperial Gate
The tour meets on the Hippodrome, opposite the German Fountain, and begins with ten minutes in Sultanahmet Square while the guide hands out headsets and sets the scene: the Byzantine palace that stood here, the conquest of 1453 and the decision of Sultan Mehmed II to build his new palace on the point above the Bosphorus. The walk to the Imperial Gate of Topkapi passes the back of Hagia Sophia and the fountain of Ahmed III, a five-minute stroll.
Topkapi Palace opening hours run from 09:00 and the palace is closed on Tuesdays, which is why the tour runs on the other six days. Because the tickets are timed and expire within minutes, our Istanbul team asks everyone to be at the meeting point on time; the tour cannot be joined once it has started.
First and Second Courtyards: the Council hall and the kitchens
Through the Imperial Gate lies the First Courtyard, a park with the Byzantine church of Hagia Irene on its left, open to everyone in Ottoman times. The skip-the-line tickets take you through security and the Gate of Salutation, with its twin pointed towers, into the Second Courtyard, where the empire was actually governed. Here the guide shows the Imperial Council hall, where the viziers met under a gilded grille behind which the sultan could listen unseen, and the Tower of Justice above it.
Along the right side run the palace kitchens, ten domed halls with tall chimneys that fed up to several thousand people a day and now display the Chinese porcelain collection, one of the largest outside China, and the copper cookware of the imperial table. The guide uses them to explain the food, ranks and daily rhythm of the court.
Third Courtyard: Audience Chamber, Sacred Relics and the treasury
The Gate of Felicity leads to the Third Courtyard, the sultan's private domain, where ambassadors were received in the Audience Chamber just inside the gate. The guide then takes you to the Chamber of Sacred Relics in the Privy Chamber, where the cloak and standard of the Prophet Muhammad, swords of the first caliphs and other relics brought from Cairo and Mecca after 1517 are displayed, with a continuous recitation of the Quran. Visitors of all faiths are welcome; modest dress and quiet are asked.
The treasury pavilions across the courtyard hold the famous emerald-handled dagger, the spoon-maker's diamond and the jewelled thrones; queues can form here, and the guide times the visit to avoid the worst of them. Allow that this is the richest part of the palace and the part most people remember.
The Fourth Courtyard terraces over the Golden Horn
The last and most relaxed part of the palace is the Fourth Courtyard, a series of garden terraces with pavilions built by successive sultans: the tiled Baghdad and Revan kiosks commemorating campaigns of the 1630s, the gilded Iftar canopy where the sultan broke his fast in Ramadan, and the marble pool terrace. From here the view opens over the Golden Horn to the Galata Tower on one side and across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar on the other, and the guide allows a few minutes for photos.
Is Topkapi Palace worth visiting with a guide rather than alone? The complex is vast and the labels are short; a guide turns a list of rooms into the story of a dynasty and knows where the crowds are at each hour. The guided route covers the highlights in about two hours.
The Harem
The tour ends with 45 minutes in the Harem, which needs its own ticket, already included. This was the private household of the sultan: a warren of some 300 rooms, courtyards and corridors on the side of the Second Courtyard, ruled by the Queen Mother and guarded by the black eunuchs. The guide leads you along the Golden Road from the eunuchs' courtyard to the apartments of the Queen Mother, the baths, the imperial hall with its canopied throne and the twin pavilions of the crown princes.
What people remember are the surfaces: walls of Iznik tiles with tulips and Quranic verses, cupboard doors inlaid with mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell, painted ceilings and stained glass. The guide separates legend from fact about life here, from the strict hierarchy of the women to the education of the princes, before the tour ends near the Harem exit.
