Overview
This two-hour sightseeing cruise is the easiest way to see Istanbul from the water if you are staying in the old city: you meet a host opposite Hagia Sophia, walk down together to the pier below Sultanahmet and board a boat that covers both the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus in one loop. An audio guide app in eight languages, Arabic and English among them, tells the story of Galata Tower, Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy, the Bosphorus Bridge, Rumeli Fortress, Beylerbeyi Palace and the Maiden's Tower, and the host adds live commentary on deck. It is a shared cruise with departures at 12:20 and 15:50; in autumn and winter the later sailing returns as the sun goes down behind the old city. No food, drinks or hotel pickup are included.

Full Description
From Sultanahmet to the pier and into the Golden Horn
The cruise begins on land: the host, holding a yellow umbrella, waits in front of the kiosk opposite Hagia Sophia twenty minutes before departure, then leads the group on a brisk ten-minute walk downhill to the pier on the shore below the old city. The boat casts off and turns first into the Golden Horn, the deep natural harbour that divides the historic peninsula from Galata and Beyoğlu, passing under the Galata Bridge with its fishermen and fish restaurants.
From the water the audio guide points out the Galata Tower on its hill, the Süleymaniye Mosque above the Eminönü quays, and the ferries weaving between Karaköy and Kadıköy. This stretch is short but gives the best skyline photographs of the day, with the domes and minarets of Sultanahmet behind you. If you are looking for a Golden Horn boat tour that also covers the Bosphorus, this is the loop that does both.
The European shore: Dolmabahçe, Çırağan and Ortaköy
Leaving the Golden Horn the boat heads up the European shore of the Bosphorus, the strait that separates Europe from Asia and links the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. The first great building is Dolmabahçe Palace, the nineteenth-century marble residence of the last sultans, with its 600-metre waterfront, ceremonial gate and clock tower. Beyond it comes Çırağan Palace, the stone shell of another sultan's palace restored as a hotel, and then the small, ornate Ortaköy Mosque standing right at the water's edge below the Bosphorus Bridge.
The Bosphorus Bridge, officially the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, was the first to join the two continents when it opened in 1973; passing beneath its span is the moment everyone goes out on deck. The audio guide covers each landmark as it comes into view, so keep the app open and headphones in.
The fortresses and the second bridge
Past the waterside villages of Arnavutköy and Bebek, the boat reaches the narrowest point of the strait, guarded by two Ottoman castles. On the European side rises Rumeli Fortress, built by Mehmed the Conqueror in 1452 in a matter of months to cut Constantinople off from the Black Sea before the siege; its three great towers and walls climb the hillside above the water. Directly opposite stands the smaller Anatolian Fortress, built sixty years earlier, with the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge stretching above both.
This is the turning point of the Bosphorus cruise: the boat swings round under the second bridge and comes back along the Asian shore. Allow a few minutes on the open deck here for the view down the strait towards the city, with Bebek bay on one side and the wooded Asian hills on the other.
The Asian shore, Beylerbeyi and the Maiden's Tower
On the return the audio guide turns to the Asian side: the pretty Küçüksu Palace, the yalı waterfront mansions, and Beylerbeyi Palace, the white marble summer palace of the sultans just beyond the Bosphorus Bridge, where visiting royalty once stayed. Then, off Üsküdar at the mouth of the strait, comes the Maiden's Tower on its tiny islet, a lighthouse and customs post for centuries and the subject of the city's best-loved legends.
The last minutes bring the old city back into view across the water: Topkapi Palace on its point, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque above it. On the 15:50 sailing between late October and February this is the sunset stretch, with the sky turning gold behind the minarets, which is why our Istanbul team recommends the afternoon departure in the cooler months. The boat returns to the same pier below Sultanahmet.
