Full Description
Eminönü, the Golden Horn and Galata
The cruise starts where Istanbul's water traffic has always started: Eminönü, the old-city shore of the Golden Horn, with the Spice Bazaar and the New Mosque behind the quays and ferries crossing to Kadıköy and Üsküdar. The boat moors beside the small Ahi Çelebi Mosque a few minutes' walk from the Eminönü stops of the T1 tram and the Marmaray, docking about ten minutes before departure. It casts off under the Galata Bridge, with its fishermen above and fish restaurants below, and the guide begins with the Galata Tower on its hill, the Genoese watchtower that still marks the skyline of Karaköy.
Looking back, the domes of the Süleymaniye Mosque rise above the quays, the view that ends the cruise too. A Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü is the simplest to reach of all the city's boat tours, which is why our Istanbul team recommends it for guests staying in Sultanahmet, Sirkeci or Beyoğlu.
The European shore: Dolmabahçe, Ortaköy and the first bridge
Out of the Golden Horn the boat turns north along the European shore of the strait. The guide points out Dolmabahçe Palace, the marble residence built by the sultans in the 1850s with its long waterfront facade, ceremonial gate and clock tower, then Çırağan Palace next door, a sultan's palace restored as a hotel. Beyond them stands Ortaköy Mosque at the water's edge, the most photographed spot on the Bosphorus, with the Bosphorus Bridge, the first link between Europe and Asia, soaring directly above it.
Past the bridge the shore softens into the waterside villages of Arnavutköy and Bebek, with their wooden mansions, cafés and moored yachts in the curve of Bebek bay. On the two-hour options this stretch is enjoyed from the deck without stopping; on the lunch cruise the meal is usually served around here, so you eat with the palaces going by.
Rumeli Fortress and the turn under the second bridge
The narrowest point of the Bosphorus is guarded by Rumeli Fortress, the castle Mehmed the Conqueror built on the European shore in 1452, in a few months, to close the strait before the siege of Constantinople; its great towers and walls climb the hillside right above the water and are best seen from a boat. Facing it across the water is the older Anatolian Fortress, and above both stretches the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the second crossing, opened in 1988.
This is where the cruise turns: the boat swings round under the bridge and heads back down the Asian side. Guests on the open deck get the full sweep of the strait here, with the city far ahead and the wooded hills of both shores on either side, and the guide explains how the two castles once controlled every ship bound for the Black Sea.
The Asian shore and an hour in Beylerbeyi
Coming back along the Asian shore the guide picks out Küçüksu Palace, the small ornate hunting lodge of the sultans by the mouth of a stream, the long waterfront of the Kuleli military school with its twin towers, and rows of yalı mansions. Just beyond the Bosphorus Bridge the boat ties up at Beylerbeyi, a quiet Asian-side neighbourhood built around Beylerbeyi Palace, the white marble summer palace of the nineteenth century where visiting royalty stayed.
With the lunch and breakfast options you have about an hour ashore here: walk the quay beneath the bridge, have tea in a waterfront café, visit the palace gardens or the village mosque, or browse the small shops of the main street. It is a side of Istanbul most visitors never see, calm and local, and a Beylerbeyi stop is the real difference between this cruise and the usual non-stop loop. The two-hour options pass Beylerbeyi without stopping.
The Maiden's Tower and the return to the old city
After Beylerbeyi the boat continues down the Asian shore past Üsküdar to the Maiden's Tower, the small white lighthouse tower on its islet at the mouth of the strait, the subject of the city's best-loved legend and the last landmark the guide describes. Across the water the old city rises again: Topkapi Palace on its point, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and, as you enter the Golden Horn, the Süleymaniye Mosque above the quays.
On the 16:00 sunset cruise this is where the sky turns gold behind the minarets, and on the 18:00 and 20:00 sailings the bridges, palaces and mosques are lit. The boat docks at Eminönü or Karaköy pier depending on availability, both minutes from the tram, about three hours after departure on the lunch cruise and about two hours on the non-stop options, give or take fifteen minutes for wind and currents.
