Headsets let you hear the guide clearly in the crowds. The default option is the small group from the Sultanahmet meeting point; a larger group of up to 24, a private tour for your party, and a departure from the Galataport cruise terminal are also on the booking panel.

Full Description

Sultanahmet and the Basilica Cistern

The tour begins in Sultanahmet, the square that was the heart of Byzantine Constantinople and Ottoman Istanbul alike, where your guide gathers the group, hands out the headsets and gives a fifteen-minute orientation before the first site. Then you go underground. The Basilica Cistern is the largest surviving Byzantine reservoir in the city, built in the sixth century beneath a public square to store water for the Great Palace; 336 marble columns salvaged from older temples hold up its brick vaults above a shallow pool. With tickets pre-reserved, the group walks straight in and follows the wooden walkways to the far corner where two carved Medusa heads serve as column bases, one sideways, one upside down.

The guided visit lasts about thirty minutes, enough for the columns, the weeping column and the Medusa heads without the long wait at the ticket desk. There are about fifty steps down and up again and no lift; if the cistern is closed, the tour visits the Şerefiye or Binbirdirek cistern instead.

Hagia Sophia with skip-the-line entry

From the cistern it is two minutes across the square to Hagia Sophia, where your skip-the-line tickets take the group past the ticket desk to the security check and the ramp up to the upper gallery, the visitor route since the building returned to use as a mosque. Over about an hour the guide explains how the sixth-century basilica became the largest church in Christendom, how the dome was raised on a ring of forty windows, and how after 1453 it was converted into the imperial mosque, with mihrab, minarets and the giant calligraphy roundels standing beside gold Byzantine mosaics.

The gallery gives the best view of the dome and the prayer hall below, and the guide knows where the Deesis mosaic and the imperial panels are best seen. Dress code applies as in every mosque in Istanbul: women cover their heads, everyone covers shoulders and knees, and shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops are not allowed on this tour. Restoration scaffolding may hide parts of the interior.

Topkapi Palace: courtyards, pavilions and the Golden Horn

Topkapi Palace was the residence of the Ottoman sultans and the seat of government from the fifteenth century until the court moved to Dolmabahçe in the 1850s, a city within a city on the headland above the meeting of the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. Your skip-the-line tickets take you through the Imperial Gate into the four successive courtyards, and over two hours the guide leads you to the highlights: the Divan where the council met, the kitchens with their chimneys and porcelain, the Gate of Felicity, the audience chamber, the sacred relics, and the pavilions and terraced gardens of the fourth courtyard with their view over the Golden Horn.

A Topkapi Palace tour with a guide makes sense of a complex that is otherwise confusing; the palace is vast, so if you want more time the guide will suggest what to see on your own afterwards. Note that Topkapi Palace is closed on Tuesdays, so the tour does not run that day.

The Harem, self-guided with your included ticket

The Harem, the private quarters of the sultan's family, has its own entrance from the second courtyard and its own ticket, which is included in this tour. After the guided part, you visit it at your own pace for about thirty minutes: the courtyard of the black eunuchs, the apartments of the sultan's mother, the tiled chambers of the princes and the imperial hall, with some of the finest Iznik tilework in Istanbul. It is the part of the palace that most visitors miss because of the separate ticket, which is why our Istanbul team recommends keeping the energy for it.

The tour ends inside the palace after about four hours, leaving you a short walk from Gülhane Park, the tram and the halal lokantas of Sirkeci for lunch. For Topkapi Palace tickets, Harem tickets and Hagia Sophia skip-the-line tickets alone, each is on sale separately, but having a guide and all four admissions arranged in one booking is what saves the morning.

Meeting options: Sultanahmet or Galataport for cruise passengers

The default small-group tour meets in Sultanahmet at 09:00, two minutes from the Sultanahmet stop on the T1 tram, so it works from any hotel in the Old City and from Taksim or Karaköy with a short tram ride; the exact spot comes with your confirmation. A larger group of up to 24 people follows the same route at a lower rate, and a private option gives your party its own guide at the same start time. For cruise passengers there is a separate departure from the Galataport terminal in Karaköy at 13:30 or 14:30: the guide waits at the exit even if the ship docks late, you ride the T1 tram together to Sultanahmet, about fifteen minutes, and visit the same three sites with the same tickets.

Whichever option you choose, expect airport-style security at each site, bring a headscarf and leave strollers and large bags behind; the tour is not suitable for children under 7, wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

The default option is a shared small-group tour. A larger group of up to 24, a private tour for your own party with its own guide, and a small-group departure from Galataport for cruise passengers are on the booking panel.

How long does the tour take?

About 4 hours, including the self-guided 30 minutes in the Harem at the end.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You meet the guide in Sultanahmet, two minutes from the tram stop; cruise passengers can choose the Galataport meeting option instead.

What is included?

A licensed English-speaking guide, headsets, skip-the-line tickets to Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Harem, and pre-reserved tickets to the Basilica Cistern. Meals and transport to the meeting point are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person for the group options and per group for the private option; the booking panel on this page shows the current price of each.

Do the tickets really skip the lines?

They skip the ticket desks at Hagia Sophia and Topkapi, which are the longest queues in Sultanahmet, and the cistern tickets are pre-reserved; everyone still passes the security checks.

Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?

Children from 7 are welcome; the tour is not suitable for younger children, wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments because of the cistern steps, cobbles and long walking inside Topkapi.

What should I wear and bring?

A headscarf for women, clothes covering shoulders and knees, comfortable walking shoes, water and a small bag; strollers and large bags cannot be taken in.

What is the best day and time for this tour?

Any day except Tuesday, when Topkapi Palace is closed; the 09:00 start reaches Hagia Sophia before the main crowds. Fridays are fine because the group is inside Hagia Sophia well before midday prayer.

What happens if the Basilica Cistern is closed?

The guide takes the group to the Şerefiye Cistern or the Binbirdirek Cistern nearby instead, both impressive Byzantine reservoirs.

Can I stay longer in Topkapi after the tour?

Yes. Your ticket allows you to remain in the palace after the guided visit and the Harem, and the guide will point out which sections are worth the extra time.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date and option on this page and send the request; our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the exact Sultanahmet meeting point or Galataport instructions.
