Full Description

Tuzla marina: first stop on the Asian side

After the pickup round in central Istanbul the vehicle crosses to the Asian side and makes its first stop at the marina in Tuzla, on the Marmara shore at the eastern edge of the city, about forty-five minutes from Kadıköy. It is a modern waterfront with a promenade along the yacht basin, cafés and a small amusement area, and it serves as the morning break: a walk by the water, a coffee and a restroom stop before the motorway.

Inside the marina complex there is also a lion park and an aquarium, both optional and paid on the spot if you want to add them; families with small children often do, while others simply enjoy the sea air. From Tuzla the road runs east past İzmit along the Kocaeli coast; the whole Sapanca day trip from Istanbul covers roughly 300 kilometres there and back.

Sapanca Lake

Sapanca Lake is a freshwater lake about sixteen kilometres long between the Sakarya plain and the mountains of Kartepe, and its southern shore is where Istanbul families come for weekends. The tour gives free time at the lakeside: a stroll along the shore path among willows and poplars, photographs of the water with the mountain behind, a cup of tea or coffee at a lakeside café, or simply a bench and the quiet. The lake entrance fee is included.

Is Sapanca Lake worth visiting? Our Istanbul team thinks it is the easiest real countryside you can reach from the city in a day, and it changes with the seasons: green and busy in summer, golden and misty in autumn, snow on Kartepe behind it in winter. Best time to visit Sapanca is late spring or autumn, when the air is cool and the restaurants by the streams are at their best.

Maşukiye village and lunch by the waterfall

Maşukiye is a village on the forested northern slope of Kartepe, famous across Turkey for its trout restaurants built on wooden platforms over rushing mountain streams. Lunch is at one of these riverside restaurants beside a waterfall: grilled trout or meat, fresh village bread, salads and mezes, with one soft drink included, all halal as everywhere in Turkey. You eat with the sound of water under the table and the forest overhead.

After lunch the group visits a local products shop where Maşukiye's cottage producers sell Turkish delight, honey, jams, herbal teas, handmade soaps and regional souvenirs; nothing has to be bought. Then there is time for a forest walk or, if you wish, for the optional adventure activities set up in the village: a zipline between the trees, a quad safari on the forest tracks and a giant swing over the valley.

Kartepe cable car and the glass terrace

Kartepe is the mountain above Sapanca, over 1,600 metres high and a ski resort in winter. The cable-car station near Maşukiye sends gondolas up over the beech and pine forest to a viewing area with the lake spread out below; the round-trip ride is included in the cable-car and the full-activity options and can be bought on the day with the standard option, weather permitting. A Kartepe cable car tour is the highlight of the day for many guests, especially in autumn colours or over snow.

Before the drive back the tour stops at the Kartepe glass terrace, a glass-floored platform jutting out over the forest with a wide panorama of Sapanca Lake and the valley; a small entry fee is paid on the spot. It is the best photograph of the day, and the last stop before the roughly two-hour return to Istanbul, where you are dropped at your hotel or the meeting point.

The day from Istanbul: pickup, timing and options

The trip lasts about twelve hours door to door. Pickup is between 07:45 and 09:00 depending on where your hotel is, with the exact time sent the afternoon before; the drive to Sapanca takes about ninety minutes each way on the motorway. The guide speaks English and Arabic, the vehicle is air-conditioned, and children aged three to six have their own price while infants travel free without a meal.

Four options are sold: the standard day with lunch, the same day with the cable car included, the full version with cable car, quad and zipline, and a private vehicle with driver for your own group (no guide, meals and activities paid on the spot). After booking we need each traveller's full name and passport number for the compulsory passenger insurance, so have your passport or ID with you on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

The default is a shared group day trip with a guide. A private option with your own vehicle and driver, priced per group, is available on this page.

How long does the Sapanca day trip take?

About twelve hours, with pickup between 07:45 and 09:00 and return to your hotel in the evening; the drive is roughly ninety minutes each way.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, from hotels in central Istanbul, with drop-off at the end; if your hotel is on a street the vehicle cannot enter, we give you the nearest meeting point.

What is included?

Pickup and drop-off, the English and Arabic-speaking guide, lunch with one soft drink and the Sapanca Lake entry fee; the cable car, quad and zipline are included only in the options that name them.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person for the three shared options and per vehicle for the private option; the booking panel on this page shows the current price of each.

Is the cable car included?

Only in the cable-car and the full-activity options. With the standard option you can buy the round trip on the day if the weather allows it to run.

Late spring and autumn for the colours and cool air; summer is lush and popular with Istanbul families; winter brings snow on Kartepe, when the cable car depends on conditions.

The tour runs in rain, with lunch and the shop under cover; the cable car and the zipline stop in high wind, in which case they are refunded or not sold on the day.

Why do you need my passport number?

Turkish regulations require passenger insurance for coach excursions, and the insurer needs each traveller's full name and passport number before the trip.
