Full Description
Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia has stood on the first hill of Istanbul since 537, first as the cathedral of the Byzantine capital, then as the imperial mosque of the Ottomans after 1453, a museum from 1934 and a mosque again since 2020. The central dome spans about 31 metres and rises some 55 metres over the nave, carried on four great piers and two half-domes, an engineering feat that was not surpassed for centuries. Your Hagia Sophia ticket with audio guide takes you through the visitors' entrance and up the ramp to the upper gallery, the level open to tourists.
From the gallery you look down into the nave with its eight calligraphy roundels and across to the apse mosaic of the Mother and Child, and you walk past the Deesis mosaic and the imperial panels at close range. Allow about an hour. The building is open to visitors from 09:00 to 19:00 but closed to tourists during Friday prayer from 12:00 to 14:00; restoration scaffolding may hide parts of the interior.
The Basilica Cistern
A few steps from Hagia Sophia, across the tram line, the Basilica Cistern is the grandest of the underground reservoirs that kept Byzantine Constantinople supplied with water. Built in the sixth century beneath a public square, it measures roughly 138 by 65 metres and its vaults rest on 336 columns arranged in twelve rows, a forest of marble lit from below and reflected in shallow water. Since its restoration the visit follows raised walkways, so you no longer need to worry about wet steps.
The audio guide explains how water came by aqueduct from the forests north of the city, and leads you to the two Medusa heads at the far end, one lying sideways and one upside down, and to the column carved with peacock-eye and tear motifs. A Basilica Cistern ticket visit takes 30 to 45 minutes; it is open 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00, and the cool air makes it the perfect stop in the heat of a summer afternoon.
The Blue Mosque with audio guide
The Blue Mosque, built between 1609 and 1617 opposite Hagia Sophia, is free to enter, which is why this combo includes an audio guide for it rather than a ticket. The guide walks you through the courtyard, the largest of any Ottoman mosque, and into the prayer hall where more than twenty thousand Iznik tiles in blue and white, painted with tulips, carnations and cypresses, cover the galleries beneath a dome 23 metres across, lit by more than two hundred windows.
Tourists are admitted outside the five daily prayer times, usually 08:30 to 11:30, 13:00 to 14:30 and 15:30 to 16:45, and on Fridays after the midday prayer; a visit takes about 30 minutes. Dress modestly with knees and shoulders covered, women cover their hair, and shoes are carried in a bag provided at the door. Our Istanbul team's tip: come in the early morning for the quietest courtyard and the best light on the six minarets.
Topkapi Palace (optional)
If you add the second option, your combo includes Topkapi Palace, built on the point above the Bosphorus after the conquest of 1453 and the seat of the Ottoman sultans until the court moved to Dolmabahçe in the 1850s. It is a city within a city of four courtyards: the Imperial Council hall where the viziers met, the palace kitchens with their rows of chimneys now displaying Chinese porcelain, the Treasury with its jewelled daggers and thrones, and the chamber of the Sacred Relics. The gardens look out over the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara.
The Topkapi Palace ticket in this option excludes the Harem, which needs a separate ticket at the palace. The palace is closed on Tuesdays; on other days you meet our host at the meeting point near the gate at your chosen entry time between 09:30 and 16:00, because this ticket is not a QR entry. Allow two to three hours for the courtyards and the audio guide.
Using the combo over three days
The tickets are valid for three days from the date you choose, which is the main difference from a fixed-time tour: you can see the cistern on arrival evening, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque the next morning and Topkapi Palace on the third day, or everything in one go. All the sites surround Sultanahmet Square, reached by the T1 tram from Eminönü, Karaköy and Kabataş; the Grand Bazaar is 15 minutes on foot and closes on Sundays.
Your QR tickets and audio-guide links are emailed the day before your first visit, or immediately for same-day bookings. Download the guides on wifi and bring headphones, a charged phone and a scarf. Security checks are compulsory at every site and run slower on religious holidays, Sundays and days when cruise ships dock, so arrive early. Halal food is the norm in Sultanahmet, so lunch between the sites is easy.

Can I visit on different days?
Yes. The combo is valid for three days, so you can spread the monuments across your stay.
