Full Description
Hagia Sophia, fifteen centuries in one building
Hagia Sophia was completed in 537 as the cathedral of the Byzantine capital, and for almost a thousand years its dome, 31 metres across and floating 55 metres above the floor on a ring of forty windows, was the largest in the world. After the Ottoman conquest in 1453 it became the city's imperial mosque, gaining its four minarets, the mihrab, the great calligraphic roundels and the tombs of sultans in the garden. It served as a museum through most of the twentieth century and has been a working mosque again since 2020, with the upper gallery set aside for visitors.
That layered history is why Hagia Sophia tickets are the first thing most people book for Istanbul. Standing under the dome you see Byzantine marble and mosaics, Ottoman calligraphy and lamps, and the pale light of the same windows that lit emperors and sultans. Our Istanbul team's advice is simple: go early or late, and let the audio guide walk you through it.
The upper gallery and its mosaics
Your ticket covers the upper gallery, reached by a long stone ramp rather than stairs, which the Byzantine court used so that the empress could be carried up. The gallery runs round three sides of the nave behind marble parapets, and it is from here that the dome and the half-domes are best understood as one great space. The south gallery holds the mosaics that make Hagia Sophia famous: the Deesis with its tender, worn face of Christ, the imperial panels of emperors and empresses offering gifts, and the marble door the Byzantine clergy used for their synods.
Look too for the runic graffiti scratched by a Viking guard into a parapet, the different coloured marbles brought from across the empire, and the view down to the mihrab and the calligraphic roundels. Allow 45 minutes to an hour; with the audio guide you can stop as long as you like at each panel.
Visiting hours, Friday closure and dress code
Hagia Sophia opening hours for visitors run through the day, but the upper gallery closes on Fridays from 12:30 to 14:30 for the congregational prayer, and the building is also closed to tourists during the five daily prayers and has limited hours on the first day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The ticket skips only the ticket counter: everyone passes a security check, which can take up to 30 minutes at midday in high season, so mornings right after opening and the last hour before closing are the quiet times.
Because it is a mosque, modest dress is required: shoulders and knees covered for men and women, and women cover their hair with a scarf, which you can buy near the entrance if you forget one. Shoes stay on in the gallery. Restoration work is ongoing, so a few areas may be screened off without notice; the mosaics and the dome view remain open.
Sultanahmet around the ticket: the Blue Mosque, the cistern and the square
Hagia Sophia stands at the top of Sultanahmet, two minutes from the Sultanahmet stop of the T1 tram. Facing it across the gardens and fountain of the square is the Blue Mosque, free to enter outside prayer times, and across the road is the entrance to the Basilica Cistern, the Byzantine water reservoir with its forest of columns. The Hippodrome with its obelisks is a few steps further, and the gates of Topkapi Palace are a five-minute walk behind Hagia Sophia.
If you book the option with the Blue Mosque guided tour, you visit Hagia Sophia on your own in the morning, have lunch in one of the halal restaurants of the district, then meet the guide at 14:15 at the café named in your confirmation for a 45-minute small-group tour of the mosque, timed between the afternoon prayers. Either way, plan half a day for Sultanahmet and the Grand Bazaar is ten minutes uphill, closed on Sundays.
