Overview

This combo ticket covers the three monuments every first-time visitor to Istanbul wants: the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia, all in Sultanahmet with skip-the-ticket-line entry. The default option sends the cistern and Hagia Sophia QR tickets by email the evening before your chosen date, to use at any time between 09:00 and 18:00 within three days, while Topkapi Palace is entered with a host at the time slot you choose. Online audio guides in 13 languages, including Arabic and English, cover all three sites, so you visit at your own pace without a live guide. A second option adds guided entry to the cistern, and a third adds a ticket to Dolmabahçe Palace. No hotel pickup is included; the three sites are minutes apart on foot.

Full Description

The Basilica Cistern, the underground palace

The Basilica Cistern is the largest of the Byzantine water reservoirs under Istanbul, built in the sixth century to supply the Great Palace, and the strangest sight in the old city: 336 marble columns in twelve rows rise out of still, dark water under brick vaults, lit so their reflections double them, with carp gliding between the bases. At the far end two giant Medusa heads from a Roman temple serve as column bases, one on its side and one upside down. Raised walkways cross the whole hall and the visit takes about an hour.

Your Basilica Cistern ticket is a QR code used at the entrance on Yerebatan Street, opposite Hagia Sophia, at any time between 09:00 and 18:00; it skips the ticket counter but not the security check. There is no mobile signal underground, so download the audio guide before you go down. It is cool all year, a relief in the heat of July.

Topkapi Palace with a host

Topkapi Palace was the seat of the Ottoman sultans for almost four centuries, a city of courtyards, kiosks and gardens on the point above the Bosphorus. With this ticket you choose a time slot between 09:30 and 16:00 and meet a host who walks you through the gate; from there you explore on your own with the audio guide. Highlights are the palace kitchens with their porcelain collection, the Imperial Council chamber under its tower, the treasury with the emerald dagger and the great diamond, the sacred relics, and the tiled terraces of the fourth courtyard overlooking the water.

Allow two to three hours. Topkapi Palace is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your three days around it, and note that the Harem is a separate ticket not included here. Topkapi Palace opening hours start at 09:00 and the first slot is the quietest; the host is an escort, not a guide.

Hagia Sophia's upper gallery

The third ticket takes you past the ticket queue at Hagia Sophia and up the stone ramp to the upper gallery, the visitor area of the mosque, where you look across the nave to the dome and find the famous mosaics of the south gallery, the Deesis above all. The sixth-century church became the imperial mosque in 1453 and is a working mosque again, so the ground floor is for worshippers and is not part of the ticket.

Use the QR ticket at any time between 09:00 and 18:00 on any of your three days, avoiding Friday 12:30 to 14:30 and prayer times. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered for everyone and a headscarf for women, with scarves on sale at the entrance. The audio guide covers the gallery in your language, and 45 minutes to an hour is enough. Security can take up to 30 minutes in high season, so come early.

Planning three days in Sultanahmet, and the Dolmabahçe option

The three sites sit within five minutes of each other around Sultanahmet square and the Sultanahmet T1 tram stop, so a natural plan is Hagia Sophia and the cistern on one morning, with the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and a halal lunch in between, and Topkapi Palace with your host on another day. Our Istanbul team's advice: book the Topkapi slot first, since it fixes a day, then use the two QR tickets whenever the queues are shortest, usually early morning or the last two hours before closing.

The option with Dolmabahçe Palace adds the nineteenth-century marble palace of the last sultans on the Bosphorus shore in Beşiktaş, with its crystal staircase and great ceremonial hall; it is closed on Mondays and the ticket is used on its own day, reached by the T1 tram to Kabataş. The second option swaps the self-guided cistern visit for entry with a guide at hourly slots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

It is a self-guided ticket package with audio guides; the Topkapi host simply escorts you through the gate. A private licensed guide for any of the sites can be arranged on request.

How long does it take?

About an hour each at the cistern and Hagia Sophia and two to three hours at Topkapi Palace; the tickets are valid for three days so you can split them across your stay.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. All three monuments are within five minutes' walk of the Sultanahmet T1 tram stop.

What is included?

Skip-the-ticket-line entry to the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace with a host and the Hagia Sophia upper gallery, plus online audio guides in 13 languages. The Harem, the Hagia Sophia ground floor, earphones and transport are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Do I have to visit all three on the same day?

No. The tickets are valid for three days from first use; only the Topkapi visit has a fixed time slot.

Which days are the sites closed?

Topkapi Palace closes on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe Palace on Mondays, and Hagia Sophia closes to visitors on Friday from 12:30 to 14:30 and during prayers.

Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?

Children are welcome and the cistern is a favourite. The cistern has stairs and the palace courtyards are uneven, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

What should I bring?

Your phone with the tickets and downloaded audio guides, headphones, ID, modest clothing and a scarf for Hagia Sophia, and a small bag only.

What is the best time to visit?

Right after opening at 09:00 or in the last two hours before 18:00, when security lines are shortest; take the earliest Topkapi slot if you can.
