Overview
This is a two-and-a-half-hour guided tour of Topkapi Palace and its Harem led by a licensed historian guide, from the Hippodrome in Sultanahmet at 10:00 or 14:00 daily except Tuesday. In the default option the fast-track tickets for the palace and the Harem are included, so you pass the ticket line with the guide; a second option serves guests who already hold tickets or a museum pass. Headsets let you hear the guide clearly in the crowded rooms. The route runs from the Imperial Gate through the courtyards, the Imperial Council, the kitchens, the Treasury, the Holy Relics and newly opened sections such as the palace hospital, then thirty minutes inside the Harem; afterwards you may stay in the palace as long as you like. It is a shared small-group walking tour; no hotel pickup.

Full Description
From the Hippodrome past the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia
The tour meets on the Hippodrome, the ancient racing square in the middle of Sultanahmet, in front of the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum and beside the Egyptian Obelisk. Before the palace the guide walks you past the Blue Mosque, pointing out its six minarets and the courtyard arcade, and then past Hagia Sophia, where you stop for photographs and a short account of how a sixth-century cathedral became an imperial mosque; the two are passed, not entered, so the whole of the tour's time belongs to Topkapi.
This ten-minute walk is also the easiest way to orient yourself in the old city: the tram stop behind you, the Basilica Cistern on your left, the palace walls ahead. The guide holds a white flag, and the meeting point is two minutes from the Sultanahmet stop of the T1 tram, so there is no need for a transfer.
The first and second courtyards of Topkapi Palace
You enter through the Imperial Gate beside the Fountain of Ahmed III into the first courtyard, a park-like space with the church of Hagia Irene that was once open to the public and the janissaries; then the Gate of Salutation with its twin towers leads into the second courtyard, where only the sultan could ride on horseback. Here the historian guide explains the Imperial Council chamber where the viziers met under the watch of a grilled window from which the sultan listened unseen, the Tower of Justice above it, and the enormous kitchens whose chimneys line the right-hand wall.
The palace was begun by Mehmed II in the 1460s and grew for four centuries, and this courtyard is where the guide lays out the structure of the Ottoman state, the janissaries, the harem and the hierarchy of gates, so that everything you see afterwards makes sense. Expect about forty minutes here.
The third courtyard: Treasury, Holy Relics and newly opened rooms
Through the Gate of Felicity you reach the third courtyard, the sultan's private domain, with the Audience Hall where ambassadors were received and the library of Ahmed III. The Imperial Treasury displays the jewelled dagger with its three emeralds, the great pear-shaped diamond, thrones and ceremonial armour; the rooms are small and busy, and the headsets mean the guide can keep explaining while you move through at your own pace. Opposite, the Chamber of the Holy Relics holds the mantle, the standard and other relics of the Prophet and the swords of the early caliphs, with continuous Quran recitation.
The guide also takes you into sections opened to visitors in recent years, including the palace hospital where the pages and staff were treated, areas few tours include. From the terrace of the fourth courtyard the walk ends with views over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus and the tiled Baghdad Kiosk.
The Harem: thirty minutes behind the Carriage Gate
The Harem needs its own ticket and is included in the default option. You enter through the Carriage Gate beside the Council chamber, pass the guard room and the quarters of the black eunuchs, and follow the narrow tiled corridors into the courtyard of the Queen Mother, the sultan's mother, who ruled this private city of several hundred rooms. The Imperial Hall, with its dome, gilded throne, Iznik tiles and musicians' gallery, is the largest room in the palace; beyond it are the apartments of the sultan, the twin kiosks of the crown princes with their stained glass and the courtyard of the favourites.
The historian guide uses these thirty minutes to explain the hierarchy of the women who lived here, from novices to the mother of the sultan, and the politics decided in these rooms. Photographs are allowed; the corridors are narrow, so the group moves in single file in the busiest sections.
The practical visit: tickets, timing and free time
Topkapi Palace is open every day except Tuesday from 09:00, with the last entry an hour before closing (18:00 in summer, around 16:30 in winter). The tour starts at 10:00 or 14:00; the morning tour is quieter in the Treasury and leaves the whole afternoon for free time, while the 14:00 tour suits guests arriving from a Bosphorus cruise or a late breakfast. You skip the ticket line but not the security line, which is airport-style and longer on religious holidays, so arrive fifteen minutes early.
With the ticket-included option everything is arranged; with the ticket-free option you buy the palace and Harem tickets at the gate or use a museum pass, and if you prefer not to enter at all you may still join the outdoor part from the Hippodrome through the first courtyard to the main gates, about thirty minutes. After the tour stay as long as you like: the palace café terrace overlooking the Bosphorus is the perfect place to finish.
