Pamukkale travertine terraces (the Cotton Castle)

Pamukkale, meaning cotton castle in Turkish, is a hillside covered in snow-white terraces and shallow pools. Warm, mineral-rich water flows down from springs above, and as it cools it leaves layers of calcium carbonate that have built these cascades over thousands of years. The site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1988, together with Hierapolis.

Visitors walk the travertines barefoot along a marked path, so the terraces stay white; the surface is warm, slightly rough and wet, and the pools are perfect for paddling. From the upper terraces you look over the plain of Denizli and the mountains beyond. Hierapolis ancient city

On the plateau above the terraces lie the ruins of Hierapolis, a spa city founded in the second century BC and greatly expanded in Roman times, when people came from across the region to bathe in its thermal waters. Your guide leads you through its main sights: the long colonnaded street, the monumental arched gate at its northern end and the restored theatre, whose stage building is decorated with finely carved reliefs.

Beyond the city walls stretches the necropolis, one of the most extensive ancient cemeteries in Anatolia, with sarcophagi, tumuli and house-shaped tombs lining the road. A private Hierapolis visit is not needed to enjoy it: the guided walk explains the history clearly, and you then have free time. Wear comfortable shoes here, as the paths are uneven and the site is large.

The Antique Pool and the Hierapolis Museum

In the middle of the ancient city is the Antique Pool, a natural thermal pool where you swim among fallen marble columns that collapsed into the water during an ancient earthquake. The water stays at around 36 degrees all year, clear and slightly fizzy, and swimming here is one of the most memorable experiences of the day. The Antique Pool has its own ticket, which is not included in either option.

Next to it, the Hierapolis Archaeology Museum is housed in the former Roman baths and displays sarcophagi, statues and reliefs found at the site and nearby. If you prefer not to swim, the museum and the shaded cafe terraces are a good way to spend part of your free time. Bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim.
