Ephesus Ancient City

Ephesus was a great Ionian harbour city and later the capital of the Roman province of Asia, a city of temples, baths and markets that ranked among the largest in the ancient world. As the coastline silted up the harbour was lost, and the city was slowly abandoned, which is why so much of its marble street plan survives today. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015.

Visitors walk downhill through the site from the upper gate to the lower gate, about 2 km of gently sloping marble paths.
