Scuba diving in Fethiye

Fethiye is one of the best places in Türkiye to try scuba diving. The bay and the coast towards Ölüdeniz are sheltered by mountains and islands, so the sea is usually calm, and visibility often reaches well beyond twenty metres in summer. Strict rules protect underwater areas, which helps keep the reefs healthy and the fish curious rather than shy.

The water is warm from late spring to autumn, reaching its peak in August and September, which makes the best time for scuba diving in Fethiye roughly June to October. With calm water, clear visibility and experienced instructors, it is one of the gentlest introductions to diving you can find on the Mediterranean coast.

The dive boat and briefing

The day starts on a comfortable dive boat with plenty of deck space, shade and room to prepare the equipment. Before anyone enters the water, the instructors give a clear briefing: how the mask, regulator and buoyancy jacket work, how to equalise your ears, and the hand signals used underwater.

Beginners then practise simple skills in shallow water, such as breathing through the regulator and clearing a little water from the mask, until they feel relaxed. Certified divers check their gear and plan the dive with their guide. No certification is required, but you will be asked about your health, and honest answers keep everyone safe. Nervous beginners can take their time; the instructors never rush anyone below the surface.

The underwater world: reefs, caves and marine life

Each of the two dives explores a different site chosen by the instructors for the day's conditions. Expect rocky walls covered with sponges, small caves and swim-throughs where light filters in, and meadows of seagrass that shelter young fish. Beginners stay at a comfortable, shallow depth set by the instructor, always within arm's reach of their guide.

Look out for groupers resting under ledges, octopus hiding in crevices, moray eels, starfish, sea urchins and shoals of bream and damselfish flashing in the light. On lucky days, turtles are seen along this coast. The second dive usually feels easier than the first, so many guests enjoy it most. Remember to look up as well as down: the light on the surface from below is unforgettable.

Lunch on board and the Fethiye coast

Between the two dives there is time to rest, warm up in the sun and enjoy lunch on board while the boat moves to the next site. The surface interval is part of safe diving, giving your body time to adjust before the second descent, and it is a good moment to share stories with your group.
