The Pamukkale travertine terraces

Pamukkale means Cotton Castle in Turkish, and the name fits: calcium-rich thermal water has flowed down this hillside for thousands of years, leaving gleaming white pools and ridges that look like a frozen waterfall. On the way out of the site the group passes the necropolis, one of the largest ancient burial grounds in Anatolia, with hundreds of tombs, sarcophagi and mausoleums, some more than two thousand years old. Wealthy families built elaborate stone tombs here with carvings and inscriptions that hint at the lives of those buried.

Walking among the weathered stones gives a rare, tangible link to the ordinary people of the city. It is the quietest part of the visit and a good place for photographs in the late light. Cleopatra's Antique Pool

Cleopatra's Antique Pool is a thermal pool where warm, mineral-rich water bubbles up around Roman columns and marble fragments that fell into it during earthquakes.
