Swords Valley (Kılıçlar Vadisi)

Swords Valley, just north of Göreme, is named for the sharp, blade-like ridges that rise from its floor, sculpted by wind and water from the soft volcanic tuff. Narrow paths wind between poplars, small orchards and vineyards, and the valley walls are pierced with dovecotes and caves once used by local farmers and monks.

It is a quiet valley, away from the traffic, which makes it ideal for horseback riding: the sandy trails are gentle, and the horses know every turn. On the default one-hour ride, this is where you spend most of your time, with a photo stop of 15 to 20 minutes surrounded by rock formations. The guide rides with the group and adjusts the pace to the least experienced rider.

The Nuns' Monastery (Kızlar Manastırı)

The Nuns' Monastery, also known as the Monastery of the Virgin Mary or Girls' Monastery, is a striking multi-storey complex carved into a tall rock cone near the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Rooms, chapels and passages are stacked on several levels and connected by tunnels and ladders, and it is believed to have housed a community of nuns in the Byzantine period.

From the saddle you see the monastery rising above the valley, one of the most dramatic sights of a Cappadocia horse riding tour. The trail around it opens onto wide views of Göreme, and on clear days towards Uçhisar Castle. Rose and Red Valleys at Sunrise and Sunset

The longer options on this page continue into Rose Valley and Red Valley, where the rock changes colour from pale pink to deep red as the light moves. The two-hour sunrise ride starts at around 6:00 depending on the season, when a sky full of hot air balloons rises over the valleys, a magical sight from horseback. The sunset ride heads out in the late afternoon, timed so you watch the cliffs glow at dusk.

The Ranch in Göreme

Every ride begins at the ranch on the edge of Göreme, where the horses are cared for and the guides match each rider to a suitable horse. Please arrive 10 minutes before your start time. Before setting off, the team explains how to steer, stop and hold the reins, and they are happy to repeat the instructions once you are in the saddle.

With the transfer options we pick you up from your hotel in Göreme, Avanos, Çavuşin or Uçhisar by van, while in the default option you make your own way to the ranch. Riders are placed in line according to their horse, so partners may not ride directly one behind the other. Backpacks are not allowed while riding, so travel light and leave bags in the vehicle or at the ranch.
