Full Description

Çavuşin: Cave Village at the Foot of the Cliff

Çavuşin is a small village between Göreme and Avanos, built against a towering cliff riddled with old cave dwellings. High in that rock face stands the Church of Saint John the Baptist, cut out of the stone in the 5th century and counted among the earliest churches in Cappadocia. Rockfalls in the last century forced families to leave the cliff-side quarter and build new houses below, so the old village above is now a ghostly honeycomb of empty rooms and stairways.

The ride starts and ends here, where the stable sits at the edge of the valleys. Before setting off, your guide gives a safety briefing, fits your helmet and hair cap and teaches you how to steer and stop. The first half hour follows farm tracks out of the village, giving you time to settle into the saddle before the scenery opens up. Çavuşin horse riding is popular precisely because the trails leave straight from the village into quiet valleys.

Love Valley on Horseback

Love Valley is famous for the tallest and slenderest fairy chimneys in Cappadocia, smooth columns of tuff that rise more than 30 metres, each crowned by a cap of darker, harder rock. They formed as wind and water wore away the soft volcanic ash around them, while the caps protected the columns beneath. Between them, the valley floor is a patchwork of orchards, vines and poplar trees.

Riding into Love Valley lets you see these pillars from below, a view most visitors never get from the viewpoints on the rim. The group pauses for a photo stop of about 15 minutes, and your guide arranges the horses so you can take pictures of each rider with the chimneys behind. The sandy paths here are wide and flat, perfect for relaxing in the saddle as the sun drops lower.

White Valley Viewpoint

White Valley, known locally as Beyaz Vadi, joins Love Valley near Uçhisar. Its name comes from the pale, almost chalky tuff that forms soft waves and ridges along the valley walls, a striking contrast to the pink and ochre rock found elsewhere. From the viewpoint above it you look across to Uçhisar Castle and a wide stretch of fairy chimneys and plateaus.

This is the highlight of the sunset ride: the group stops for about 15 minutes as the sun sinks behind the hills and the white rock glows orange and rose. It is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Cappadocia, and the guide helps everyone get a silhouette photo against the sky. On the sunrise option the same area becomes a front-row seat for the hot-air balloons rising over the valleys at dawn.

Sunset and Sunrise in Cappadocia's Valleys

Light changes Cappadocia completely. In the late afternoon the tuff warms from cream to apricot and deep rose, shadows stretch across the valleys and the air cools quickly, especially in spring and autumn. On the return ride through Çavuşin, the last light catches the cliff of the old village before dusk falls, and the whole ride ends as the first lights come on in the houses.

The best time to ride depends on what you want to see. The default sunset ride offers warm colours and relaxed temperatures, while the sunrise option, departing before dawn, adds the spectacle of a sky full of hot-air balloons drifting over the valleys when flights are operating. The one-hour daytime ride suits travellers short on time. In summer, evenings are pleasantly cool; in winter, dress warmly as temperatures fall fast after sunset.
