Full Description
A Rooftop Workshop in the Heart of Göreme
Göreme lies at the centre of Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Around the village rise the fairy chimneys, cones of soft volcanic tuff shaped over thousands of years by wind and rain, many carved into cave homes, chapels and dovecotes that still give Göreme its storybook skyline.
The workshop is held on a rooftop terrace on Müze Caddesi, the road that runs from the village centre towards the Göreme Open-Air Museum. You sit at a work table with the rock pinnacles and cave houses in front of you, a lovely place to slow down. It is one of the most popular creative things to do in Göreme, especially for travellers who want a break between valley walks and tours.
The Craft of Turkish Mosaic Lamps
Turkish mosaic lamps draw on a long tradition of coloured glass and decorative lighting from Ottoman times, when mosques, palaces and homes were lit by richly patterned lamps. Today the lamps are made by setting small pieces of coloured glass and beads onto a glass globe in geometric or floral designs, then filling the gaps so the pattern holds together and shines when the light is on.
Your artisan explains this process at the start, shows finished examples and helps you plan your design. Some guests choose classic Ottoman-inspired patterns in turquoise, cobalt and ruby, others prefer a modern, minimalist look in a few soft colours. No two lamps are ever the same, which is exactly what makes them such special souvenirs of Türkiye.
Making Your Own Mosaic Lamp
Once you have chosen your colours, you start placing the glass pieces on the lamp's surface, one by one, building your pattern row by row. The artisan supports you with technique and balance and steps in whenever you need help, while leaving plenty of room for your creativity. Couples can choose to make one lamp together, and children aged 5 and over can join with adult supervision.
At the end the lamp is finished, fitted to its electric base with the bulb included, and switched on so you can see your design glow. It is then wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in a sturdy carry bag; the lamp is modular and can be taken apart for travel. Larger lamp models and size upgrades are available on request.
Planning Your Visit: Times and Practical Tips
Sessions start at 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 19:00 and last about 2 hours, or 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your design. The later sessions are lovely in summer, when the evening light warms the fairy chimneys, and in winter the midday sessions are brighter and warmer on the open terrace.
The best time to visit Cappadocia is spring and autumn, but the workshop is a great activity in any season. Hotel pickup is not included; most Göreme hotels are a short walk from the meeting point on Müze Caddesi, and a taxi from nearby towns is easy. Larger groups are advised to book ahead to secure their preferred time.
