Full Description
Göreme Open Air Museum, the heart of a Cappadocia tour
The Göreme Open Air Museum is the first stop on almost every Cappadocia tour, and for good reason. This UNESCO-listed monastic complex was carved into the soft volcanic rock by Byzantine monks, and its chapels and refectories date mainly from the tenth to the twelfth centuries. Inside the churches you find faded but vivid frescoes of saints and Bible scenes painted straight onto the stone.
Our guide explains how the monks lived and what the paintings mean, then leaves time to explore on your own. Plan on roughly one to two hours. Opening hours change by season, and the entry ticket is paid separately in the default option, as is the extra ticket that some churches, such as the Dark Church, may require. Is the Göreme Open Air Museum worth visiting? On a first trip to Cappadocia, absolutely.
Paşabağ (Monks Valley) and its fairy chimneys
Paşabağ, also called Monks Valley, sits between Çavuşin and Zelve and is where Cappadocia's fairy chimneys look their most dramatic. These tall tuff pillars often carry two or three mushroom-shaped caps, left behind as wind and rain wore away the softer stone beneath harder rock. Early Christian hermits carved simple cells into some of them, and one chimney here is linked to Saint Simeon, who lived in a small dwelling cut high in the rock.
The stop lasts around an hour and is one of the best photo opportunities on the Red route. Wear shoes with good grip because the ground is sandy. Many travellers ask how to get to Paşabağ without a car; on this tour the van takes you straight there and your guide points out which chimney was the monk's dwelling.
Pigeon Valley between Göreme and Uçhisar
Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) runs between Göreme and Uçhisar and takes its name from the hundreds of small dovecotes carved into its cliff faces. For centuries farmers collected pigeon droppings here to fertilise their fields and orchards, and some entrances were painted with patterns to attract the birds. The valley is also a favourite for hiking in Cappadocia, with a long trail linking the two villages.
On this tour you stop for about half an hour, enough to see the dovecote-studded rock walls, take photos and look over the valley floor without committing to a full hike. It makes a calm break between the museum and the underground city. The best time to visit Pigeon Valley for soft light is morning or late afternoon, which is why a guided day trip is a simple way to see it.
An underground city in Cappadocia (Özkonak)
Beneath the plains of Cappadocia, early Christian communities dug whole cities into the tuff to hide from raiders and persecution. The route normally includes Özkonak Underground City near Avanos, a maze of narrow corridors, storage rooms, kitchens and air shafts spread over several levels, with huge round stone doors that could be rolled across a passage to keep intruders out.
Allow around an hour. Passages are low and steep in places, so wear comfortable shoes and expect to duck. The stop is not suitable for anyone who is claustrophobic or finds stairs difficult, and the entry ticket is not part of the default option. An underground city tour in Cappadocia often leads people to search for Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, but Özkonak is quieter and gives the same sense of ingenious ancient life. The order of stops can change to avoid crowds.
Çavuşin village and the Uçhisar Castle viewpoint
Çavuşin is one of the oldest settlements in Cappadocia, with an abandoned village of cave houses climbing the cliff above the modern one and a rock-cut church dedicated to John the Baptist. The photo stop here shows how ordinary families once lived inside the rock, and the cliff makes a striking backdrop.
The day finishes with a photo stop at the Uçhisar Castle viewpoint. Uçhisar's castle is a huge natural rock outcrop riddled with rooms and tunnels, and it is one of the highest points in the region, so the views across Göreme and Pigeon Valley, and on clear days to the volcano Mount Erciyes, are superb. It is a fitting place to end a day trip to Cappadocia before the ride back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
How much does the Cappadocia Red and Green tour cost?
The price depends on the option you choose and the date. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each option, for adults and for children.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. The default small-group option includes pickup and drop-off from hotels in Göreme, Ürgüp, Çavuşin, Avanos, Uçhisar, Ortahisar and Nevşehir, between 9:00 and 10:00.
How long is the full-day Red and Green tour?
The tour lasts about seven to eight hours, from hotel pickup in the morning to drop-off in the late afternoon or early evening.
What is the difference between the Red tour and the Green tour?
The Red tour covers the Göreme area, with sights such as the Open Air Museum, Paşabağ and Pigeon Valley. The Green tour heads south to the underground city, valleys and viewpoints. This combined day links the best-known stops of both, so you see a lot in one day.
Are entry tickets and lunch included?
Not in the default option. Entry to the Göreme Open Air Museum and the underground city, lunch and tips are paid by you, so the cost depends on what you choose to visit and eat.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Children are welcome, and the booking panel shows the age categories. Because there is a lot of walking, steps and narrow tunnels, it suits older children better than babies and toddlers.
What should I wear and bring?
Comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water in summer, and warm layers in winter. Cover shoulders and knees for the churches, and carry some cash or a card for tickets and lunch.
Can I book for today or tomorrow?
Often yes, subject to availability. Choose a date in the booking panel to see whether places remain; the tour runs in a small shared group with a morning pickup.
Is the Göreme Open Air Museum worth visiting?
For most first-time visitors it is the top sight in Cappadocia. The rock-cut churches, frescoes and monastic rooms explain the region's Christian history, and a guide makes the details much easier to understand.
What is the best time to visit Cappadocia for this tour?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with mild days. Summer is hot in the afternoon, and winter can be cold with occasional snow, which makes the landscape beautiful but the ground slippery.
